383 upgrade

I know this is a frequently asked question but instead of reviving and old thread I wanted to see if I could get some newer opinions on the topic. I have a 350 TPI out of a 91 z28, I have been thinking of going with a 383 upgrade but I don't know what else to put with it that would compliment each other to get the best performance, like cam, heads, intake. I'm new to the engine mod world so any help would be appreciated, my budget is around $3,500 too, thank you.

Re: 383 upgrade

You won’t be able to do a 383 build for a $3500 budget.

Is the 350 a good running motor?

Blew a head gasket on the 350, thats whats pushing me to upgrade rather than just replace. I've read that people have done builds with about the same budget as mine, I'm not looking for incredible power, I'd be okay with 300 to the wheels. I'm really only trying to rebuild the bottom end with a few other compatible mods, any advice?

The issue is that you might be able to build a low budget 383 long block with low end parts for $3500 if you know how to build engines, but then theres no more budget left for all of the other things you will need to support the 383 and 300rwhp. You will need headers, exhaust, high flow TPI components (aftermarket base & runners), larger injectors and a bunch of other ancillary things for the motor replacement (gaskets, tune up parts, etc).

I would do a new GM Vortec 350 L31 long block (about $2000), Scoggin Dickey vortec TPI manifold and a set of headers. With new tune up parts, gaskets, hoses, etc, you’ll be right around your $3500 number. That setup will be 275-300hp at the crank, a little more than the stock 350TPI.

More power will take more money.
