New ECM 1227165 and need Calpak

Hi Guys,
Planning to buy a new ECM 1227165 (77-6571 Cardone.com )
And needs a new Calpak, the old one ( Delco AKFT 2389 ) seems broken , so, thinking of buying a newer one from Hypertech, any idea wich one to choose for more power ? And if any better than Hypertech, pls advise...
My car is a 305HO TPI 5speed manual 1988.

Also need the two connectors that plugs in to the ECM, preferably with some cable 3-4 inches or more. Any idea of wher to buy them ?

Best to you all from Sweden !

Re: New ECM 1227165 and need Calpak

I would avoid the hypertech, many members on here have not had much success with that from what I’ve seen. You might be better off going with member www.tunedperformance.org

He could set you up with a prom that will increase timing, raise stall, lower fan temp, delete egr or Vats if you like and for a reasonable price. I had a basic prom done for my L98 GTA and it woke it up nicely and runs cooler.

The best bet for the the connectors will probably be eBay.

Do not buy a Hypertech Chip

There are few options of guys who burn chips and chips are available to have any code put on them.

Re: New ECM 1227165 and need Calpak

I can do a copy of the akft as well as a more custom performance based tune.
i have a 165 ecm coming should show to me in a week or so.
unfortunately I have no way to test it but was told it’s working. So sold as is.

Re: New ECM 1227165 and need Calpak

Hi Tuned Performance and all kind answering !

Guess I will go for a refurbished ECM from Cardone.com, just to be on safe side.

But on Calpak I would be interested in a more powerful version if possible, as said I have the AKFT 2389 mounted in the typical light blue /brown plastic holder.
If you make a Calpak for me is it totally ready in the lightblue/brown holder? Ready to just plug into the ECM Calpak place ?

I have a manual 5 speed 305TPI VIN GIFP21E2JL175175

My wish is of course to have it smooth when driving "normal", and to "give extra power" when over around 2500-isch RPM.

I dont know if my wish is possible, whats your suggestion and possible price for a complete Calpak ?

As for shipment to Sweden I have an UPS account that is possible to use.

Re: New ECM 1227165 and need Calpak

Be careful about the terminology. A CALPAK is the complete calibration unit, whereas the PROM is only the DIP memory package within the CALPAK.

CALPAK (a.k.a. MEMCAL):

PROM (pictured in add-on socket):

Re: New ECM 1227165 and need Calpak

Rockauto is out of the cardone ecm, summit racing might have it but I don’t know if they ship internationally.
the cardone is hit or miss on quality on there rebuilds. It might be hard to source a acdelco one.
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/aaz-77-6571
as far as the memcal goes all I have is used memcals they have been discontinued years ago.
i unsolder the stock chip and solder in a adapter then use a newer style flash based chip.
i have tuning options on my website but can’t increase power in just one rpm range. You would be looking at a camshaft change to target that.
for shipping if you email me or pm me your complete address I can get a Usps quote. I would have to check with my local ups delivery guy to see if he could accept a international package.
if he can’t the nearest drop off is a hour and a half away not worth me making the trip to do.
for a v8 tpi maf memcal reprogrammed I charge $135 plus actual shipping cost.

Re: New ECM 1227165 and need Calpak

If your having a bad prom this usually throws a code 41 or 51 and poor running.
if you have lack of ecm communication this might be a bad ecm.
the 165 ecm I’ve heard has a issue of solder joint connection as board cracking.
if it’s intermittent running poorly. Try wrapping on the ecm case with a screwdriver handle and see if it acts up.

Re: New ECM 1227165 and need Calpak

Tuned Performce,

yep , you are right re the 1227165 ECM, I work with military com-systems and have resoldered the ECM circuit board a couple of times wich is really time consuming.
And now finally its beyond repair.

So, guess the plan is the reworked 1227165 from Summit/Cardone, bought from Summit before, works really fine , even internationally.

And as for the Calpak, understand that my wish was a bit away from whats possible , but can you give a bit more power at all RPMs by your settings of the Calpak ?

And as for UPS, I have an account for my job, so I guess you can leave it to your normal UPS guy, that is how we do when we ship small packages around the globe.

Re: New ECM 1227165 and need Calpak

Have you considered this option?
https://www.dynamicefi.com/EBL_Flash.php
I have the P4 on my car. A friend has the flash one both are working very well.

The EBL Flash replaces the 7165. The P4 is for the 7730 cars. So yes what he linked will absolutely work on your car. Had one on my 86 Trans Am.

Re: New ECM 1227165 and need Calpak

The ebl is a great choice, repin and alittle rewiring.
Waiting to hear back from the ups driver will let you know.
alittle performance gain can be had with a custom tune but not a ton of power increase but better throttle response. Cooler running with fan temps lower.

GeneralDisorder ( cool name by the way

Have contacted Bob at Dynamicefi.com, and I think I will go that way, bcs price of and refurbished ECM from Cardone and then a new Calpak is almost same price.

Just going to study the way of changing my MAF car to be MAP, but there might be a youtube film , tips appreciated..

Friday morning here now, so the traditional Beer and Pizza is awaited for tonight
Thanks and best to you all.

You will get a sheet with the EBL that will have the directions on what you need to do.
