Keeps dying during idle adjustment

88 tpi 350
I am trying to adjust my idle. But it won't stay running. Here is what I did.
1. Bridged ab to put in diagnostic mod
2. Turned on the ignition
3. Waited 30 seconds turned off the ignition
4. disconnected the iac and est bypass
5. Tried to start it and it will only stay running if I give it gas. As soon as I get off the pedal it dies.
How do i set the idle to 450 in drive if it won't stay running?

Re: Keeps dying during idle adjustment

No need to disconnect the est when doing minimum idle speed adjustment.
can adjust higher than 450 rpm. Iac counts or steps 20-25 warm engine.
idle speed can be set in park much safer than drive.

What should the idle be in park?

Re: Keeps dying during idle adjustment

My problem is its dying sometimes when I come to a stop and when I put it in gear. Then other times the idle feels too high and it jerks into gear. I have cleaned throttle body, replaced MAF, TPS, (set tps to .54) new IAC, 02 sensor, fuel filter, Coolant temp sensor. Fuel pressure has been checked and its good 32 at idle and 42 when FPR is disconnected.
checked for vacuum leaks.

Re: Keeps dying during idle adjustment

Tuned is right, you should be setting your idle for 550 to 600.

Mnimum idle speed in the ECM is 575 rpm in gear (625 rpm in park) when fully warmed up.

If you're trying to idle at 450 rpm, you may be bouncing off of stall saver parameters in the ECM, causing erratic idle, hunting, and other issues.

Should it run with the iac and est bypass disconnected?

Re: Keeps dying during idle adjustment

If you disconnect the IAC you'll have to open the Throttle blades to make up for the loss of idle air. You may also get a code thrown.

It'll run with the EST disconnected sufficiently enough to adjust the base timing, but I wouldn't drive it like that. You'll get a code thrown with this as well.

Re: Keeps dying during idle adjustment

I had the same issue when setting my base idle, I just turned the adjust screw to make the idle really high then backed it down till I reached the stock setting in drive, before that it just wouldn't even start while trying to set it.

I'd suggest doing how I did, follow all the procedures for setting it but start with an idle high enough for it to run with the iac disconnected.

Set the idle in park to 650 but now my problem is anytime I slow down the rpms bottom out and it stalls. Anyone know what that could ?

Look into the MAF sensor. It could not be reading correctly @ idle causing the car to stall. Also check your fuel filter. I see you have proper pressure but if it is old it may be restricting fuel flow.

Re: Keeps dying during idle adjustment

I still can't figure out why it won't run with the iac disconnected. I have the torque screw all the way up and it still won't run unless my foot it on the gas
How can I set the idle if I can't get off the accerator?

Re: Keeps dying during idle adjustment

My current idle-I am going in order -Park to reverse then reverse to neutral then neutral to drive -- Currently in park it's 750-800. Shift into reverse it's 600. Neutral it revs to 1100 and then back down to 750. Drive it is around 600. Drive to neutral it revs to 1100 and back down to 750-800

Re: Keeps dying during idle adjustment

How do I adjust the idle with the iac disconnected if I turned the torque screw as far as possible and it still won't stay running?

Re: Keeps dying during idle adjustment

You have a timing or fuel related issue.

oh I gotcha. I dont ever take it out i just disconnect it. How do you set minimum idle without disconnecting it? Also I thought it might be fuel at first as well but Fuel is good 32 at idle and 42 with the fpr disconnected.

Re: Keeps dying during idle adjustment

You might double check base timing 6dbtc with the est disconnected then iac to set minimum idle speed. With the aldl jumpered the iac with ratchets closed. You can disconnect while ratcheting in. Then start adjust minimum idle speed and then if successful readjust tps.
your wording make it seem the iac was removed.
