need a distributor

MSD Ignition 8366 MSD Pro-Billet Ready-To-Run EFI Distributors | Summit Racing

Is this worth the money ??? Doesn't seem so reading the reviews.
Think I'm going to rebuild my 80,000 mile OEM unit. I'd gladly spend the money, but the reviews are **** poor.

Re: need a distributor

I found a AC Delco reman but it was near $300 but has worked well the last few years. It came with a new GM ignition control module too.

For aftermarket performance the DUI (Davis Unified Ignition) seem like the best out there, not cheap at a little over $300 but they are supposed to be good quality and excellent performance.

Re: need a distributor

Besides a good quality spark, I don't see how a billet distributor increases performance. I am highly considering rebuilding my unit. New pickup coil, and call it a day.

If that’s the original I bet that will do the trick just rebuilding it, those GM ones were built pretty well.

Re: need a distributor

The only problem I had with the distributor since day 1: Rust would collect under the cap & rotor, and I would have to vacuum it out every 10,000 miles. Like a little pile of rust.

Which ICM was in it? D1984A or D1943A?

I was stunned that it came with the 369 ICM, an old hot rodder I know swears by those as the best GM ICM.

The factory one which was still good and I keep in the car as back up was a GM 048 D805

Re: need a distributor

Been running an MSD distributor for several years with the only issues being one of the terminals on the module snapping off, I'm guessing due to corrosion and/or the tension on it due to the short wire from the pickup. Replaced both, cleaned up and good as new.

I think the 369 is the same as the D1943A from what I've gathered. I'm trying to figure out which ICM is supposed to be my 1989 L98 F Body distributor. There's a D1978 in it now and that belongs in a mid 90s TBI truck it looks like. The only thing that trips me up about the D1943A/369 is it says it's for non-HEI applications. My 89 definitely has HEI with a remote coil.

Not to hijack this thread but that 369 works good in my L98 TPI, if I were you I would order up the genuine GM D1984A if there were any doubts. Rockauto has a decent deal on them.

If you want to get deeper into this I would start your own thread, you will get better responses to exactly what you are asking.

I think GM used non-HEI to distinguish the remote coil / small cap distributor setups from the integrated coil units. The correct part number for an '89 L98 is 10496048 which has been superseded three or four times, but it ends up being D1943A.

Re: need a distributor

I brought a $65 Chinese distributor from Rock Auto, fully loaded. Cap & Rotor & everything. Dropped it in, fired right up. Car idles better than it has in 15 years. and I didn't even put a timing light on it yet.
OE distributor was trashed at 78,000 miles.
