Vehicle: 88' Trans Am - 305 TPI - Manual - Analog Cluster - RIGHT HAND DRIVE
I was testing an earth today between the C2 instrument connector and the 'M' Port on the C207 connector. I accidentally tried to start the car with the C207 disconnected after doing my test. Quickly realised and plugged it back together.
From there, my car won't start. I can't hear the fuel pump prime, and there is no fuel in the fuel rail from priming after trying to turn the car over.
Now I believe my fuel pump has coincidentally died.
I performed the following actions.
I checked the fuel pump 20A fuse near the battery, and all the fuses in the fuse panel. (ALL GOOD)
I tested to see if the Fuel pump relay was getting 12V at the thick orange wire (IT WAS)
I removed the fuel pump relay and manually bridged the ORANGE fuel pump wire to the TAN wire, then turned the key to the ON position (I couldn't hear the fuel pump priming).
Which means to me the fuel pump has died at a horrible time on its own accord. Does anyone think it could be something else?
Any advice is appreciated. If you're an electrical wizard, please read my other post on gauge cluster resistors. much appreciated.
If you connected the orange wire (constant 12V+) to the tan wire (fuel pump feed) there would be no need to turn on the ignition.
if you can access the C313 connector near the rear of the car, you can apply 12V+ to the tan wire there and eliminate all other wiring harness possibilities. You can also verify the pump ground at the same connector, since it will not run without a ground./ negative connection.
Not all pumps are clearly audible. If you power it right at the tank connector, it should be more apparent.
Thank you for the reply and the diagram to go with it. I followed your steps and could audibly hear the pump engage. I found the cause wasn't the pump at all.
The positive wire that runs from the battery to the fuel pump relay via the 20A inline fuse has simply broken in half near the battery. Quick crimp and fix job.
Thankfully, it wasn't the pump. I did not want to replace that again.
Now to fix my fuel gauge from sweeping to EMPTY.. I suspect the signal wire is grounding out?
