I have read somewhere on this forum that if you stick a 1:6 ratio rocker on the intake side of the ZZ9 then you basically have the LT4 Hotcam. Is this right? Which do you all feel is better. I know the LT4 is cheaper. The cam will be going into a pre-86 4-bolt block with retro fit rollers. The ZZ9 can come in a pre-86 version. Does anyone know about the LT4? This will all be under AFR 190's. Read the signature for more car info. I will definitely have a custom PROM.

 

By your sig., I take it you will be using a long tube runner TPI intake? Ported or with different runners? If so, I suggest the ZZ9 or even the LPE 211/219.

 

Guess I forgot to mention......SuperRammed 383ci. Sorry. Loose converter with 3.70 rear end.

 

SuperRam w/383! HOT Cam. The LPE 219/219 is pretty good too for the size of your engine. You can retro-fit any roller cam you want. :lala:

I'd go with the LPE 219/219 DEFINITELY! There are Vette guys running 11.5's-high 11's on that combo in a 383. I've yet to see a HOT cammed car go better than 12.5, and that was in an LT1 car, every SR or LTR setup with the HOT cam seems to run low 13's. Not that someone hasn't done better with it, but I've yet to see it.

The Vettes are typically a couple to 4 tenths faster than the F-bodies b/c of weight and they seem to hook easier too, but I'd guess you'd run very low 12's with an AFR 190, SR, LPE 219 combo on a 383. I have that combo on my 355 and hope to see 12.5's this year, but I don't have times yet due to it being winter and I have a broken tranny.

 

So pretty much any cam will work in an older block as long as I ensure that I use the appropriate timing chain gear and a cam button to reduce camshaft walking. Is the cam button inserted from the front of the gear or from the back? I am assuming the back that way it is held in place between the cam and the came gear.

 

Hey Buckeye: Mike Davis (the same guy who has the tech article on converting your 85 to MAF and then to SD) recently went 11.94 on a 350 engine with large tube runners, LT4 HOT cam, AFR 190 heads, and a siamesed intake. I'll be in the 12's as soon as I can hook.

For a 383 and SuperRam I'd look at a bigger cam than that, maybe the GMPP 224/230 cam? Or something similar to that. Unless you want a smaller cam for better drivability.
