? about 305 TPI
Why can't 305's compete with a mustangs 302? I've heard people say the 302 has a bigger bore and a smaller stroke, so why can't you do the same when you rebuilt the 305 engine? I'm don't know a whole lot about engines thats why I'm asking and because I'm thinking of buying a 305, since I can't find a 350.

When you rebuild an engine you can't increase the bore size by that much, maybe .06" max, I think 305 bore is 3.875" vs. 4.000" on a stock 350.
What do you consider competing with a mustang? You can mod a 305 TPI to run low 14s w/o much trouble(cam swap is usually needed), how fast are the mustangs you're thinking about?
305s have a smaller bore and that limits aftermarket head selection with the stock TPI manifold. 305 or 350 probably won't go faster than 13.5 with stock un-ported heads naturally aspirated.

Thanks for the info , the reason I'm asking is there are alot of late 80's and 90's GT's heavily modded around and there are a few Saleens and Roush cars.I just want to know if I can get a 305TPI that can compete with them or if I should hold out for a 350TPI?

I'd say find out they're times(from reliable non-lying/exaggerating people). It's very hard to get a stock TPI type induction into the 12's N/A. (same for the stock mustang induction though). You can always buy a new short block 350 or 383 after you get tired of the stock engine. Depends how serious the car scene there is, around here my GTA at mid 14s beats most all imports and other 3rd gens or tpi corvettes( i don't know about the mustangs since they don't come out to race where I go) I think most stock mustang 80's to '98 times are in the mid to high 14s

Do you think with the following mods I could reach high to mid 13's? Full exhaust, chip, shift kit,K&N's and cold air induction. To tell you the truth it doesn't bother me if I lose to a Mustang, but I'd hate to lose to alot of rice rockets in a V8, because they act like they just won the Superbowl when they do beat a V8.

I wish it didn't rain yesterday while I waiting to get a run in., but i did 14.6 @96 in a 305 TPI w/ 5speed 3.42, chip, homemade cold air, AL driveshaft, and headers, ported plenum(pointless probably), high flow cat and flowmaster on stock 2.5" exhaust. I have some suspension mods as well but they're not helping traction much so(2.22 best 60')
Since then crane 2032 cam(214/220 ~.5" lift w/ 1.6 RR), valve springs, half siamesed base, homemade AFPR and underdrive pullies.
I know I picked up a considerable amount more power, but I'll have a time either wed night or fri night. Depends on weather.
I'd say you could get mid 13's in a 305 with slicks, but getting more than 100-102 mph isn't likely, but not too many get faster than that with 350s either(check another post about fastest time with stock 350 heads).
With headers, exhaust, chip, cold air, I doubt too many imports will beat you. Watch out for DSMs(eclipse/talons) , turbo RX7s and the occasional hybrid(engine swap) or turbo honda. 14.5 and 95mph is good enough to beat at least 90% of those imports except for the AWD eclipses and talons, they run mid 13s w/o much work at all.
