What size Throttle Body to buy 52mm or 58mm is the question?

Hi Guys

Well it is that time again. I am doing some more mods so here goes. This is a quick run down what I have. 86 Iroc-Z with a 350 crate motor. Crane 2040 cam and valve springs. 391 Ford nine inch rear. air bags. 50/50 Lakewods on back. Panhard bar, lower control arms. etc for suspension. ADS superchip, pullies, FP regulator, MSD Digital 6,nitrous. Headers cat back etc. I have not yet touched the heads or runners or throttle body. I have ported the plenum some.

With this setup I tried a bored out 52mm throttle body at the strip and there was only a 1/100 of a second difference between the stock throttle body.

I intend to go with the SLP runners and port and polish the base and plenum as well as the base.

Should I Buy a BBK 52mm or 58 mm Throttle body.

All and any advice would be appreciated....

Thanks,
Jamie

Stock plenum? 58mm? Hehehehehe....

If you want to do it right... be prepared to molest the stock plenum. If you really want to do it right, you will need to have some welding done to the plenum, grind the RH side runner, and do a whole bunch of work to make the 58 fit and not see a wall of aluminum when its open. Really, a 58 is just way too big for a TPI IMO. The plenum is tiny by comparison. Cant tell you the benefits if any, the jury is still out so to speak. Its a BBK unit too, and I am still trying/waiting to sort things out with them. I'll hold my true opinion for now, see what they plan on doing first.

I think the T-body is the last thing you need to do after the car is done. It seems that some see a gain and some do not. It depends on your combo and at what RPM you think you are going to see a change. I did see an improvment in top end power but for a very short part of the power band. With out question you will need to gut out your plenum if you do it.
