WHat flows more Firebird air filter setup or Camaros?
The dual intake tract of a Camaro seems good(ram-air effect) ecxept when it hits the top of the radiator where it necks down..The "more round" tract of Firebirds doesnt neck down but makes a sharp turn..

No one has flow tested the stock intake setups. The debate of which intake is more restrictive is kinda like asking a young kid if a tall skiny glass or a short fat glass holds more water. Obviously they hold the same amount but they look different. Same goes for the air intakes on tpi fbodies. I've got one of each and effectively they both kneck down to the same sq. in. and have essentially the same filter area. The only difference is where they pick up air and each has its benefits. When it comes down to it, it really doesn't matter, they both run the same times on the dragstrip.

Nobody thinks on the Camaro intake that its restrictive in the least?? Looking at air intakes (mostly after market) for other cars you usually see 3" tubing +/- from the TB straight to the filter. I was looking at the plastic housing and couldnt help but think by the way it bottles down that it wouldnt be restrictive atleast compared to 3" tubing from TB to filter, plus it drags air over the radiator. Im not about to relocate my battery for an SLP dual CAI, but I want a better flowing air intake without a hackjob and Id like it have the filter outside the engine compartment if possible. Ive seen some good/bad ideas on here when searching about CAI. I might try ram air thru the foglights deal, then try and fab up CAI somehow and see if there is any benefit whatsoever, if I get the numbers Ill be sure to post...

I really want the SLP dual CAI, but I dont want to have to relocate the battery or have a cut off switch to be legal for the track. If it wasnt for above Id have the SLP CAI on the car already, I just wish there were more options available....

Well, I have until the 22nd of March to install my cut-off switch on my car. I was thinking about trying to install a fake battery somewhere in the engine bay so that I can pass Tech easier.
Running the wires for the cut-off switch isn't going to be fun.
I was thinking about having the switch kill the power to the fuel pump, since that should turn the car off, but I am not too sure about the IHRA and NHRA rules/regulation.
I need to find out about the requirements.

The early firebird airboxes were pure crap. In 88 they got a much freer flowing setup that probably evened things out a little. The 85-87 boxes were so restrictive that I picked up VERY noticable gains on my 2.8 from replacing it with 3" dryer hose.
ya on my 87 the air filter element isn't to bad, its between the throttle body and filter that sucks. there is like 2.25 sq in. so it doen't flow very good. but I'm taking it off and putting on some 3" stuff.
I don't know if you guys ever heard of this, but I have one and am about to install it....
The part I'm referring to is a molded piece of fiblerglass that goes on top of the Z28 airbox. What you do is cut the top of the airbox off with a cutoff wheel. You then mold on this fiberglass piece that has a bigger inner area, thus eliminating the bottleneck in the stock airbox. I have heard claims of an increase of 80 CFM at the box.
I will post pics when its done
