clutch disengagement problem

i just bought an '88 iroc z with a factory 5-spd. i'm getting some serious syncronizer howl when i try to put the car in gear. i've determined that the clutch isn't properly disengaging. the strange thing about this is that the problem is intermittent. when i first start the car the clutch will dissengage fine. then as idle increases the clutch doesn't seem to disengage until i kick-down the car to make the idle decrease. then it seems that the clutch will fully disengage and the car will go into first or reverse.
when changing gears obviously the input shaft of the trans isn't below 1000 rpm so the syncronizers howl going into gear most of the time.
is this a common problem for these cars, and if so please let me know. if not, please advise me as to the most likely problem. thanks much.
