tv cable make it shift like a caddy? please help!

hey
I have an 86 Iroc-z with a 305 tpi and 700r4. One day out of the blue it started shifting VERY soft! It used to shift pretty agressive, to the point that i had to manuelly shift it because the shifts would make it bog a little. Now I can't feel it shift at all! I know that it's shifting because my rpm will drop about 100 or so. Not 1000rpm...but only 100rpm! And the torque converter dosen't lock up all the time. Somtimes it will....but most times it won't. I have changed the fluid and filter ( as all the stupid garages here to me was the problem...small town) and that didn't change the way it's working!
Could the tv cable being out of adjustment cause my tranny to act this way? If not...what else could it be?
Newbie here so any imput would be great.
Thanks

Yes, the TV adjustment is critcal and it is not like tuning in a radio statio. Set it and you are done. To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the 'D' shaped lock button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting (The black housing that the metal cable is in will move forward). Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal still floored, press the 'D' button and pull the cable casing (the black tube) back as hard as you can (putting maximum tension on the metal cable) and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable casing so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.

Hey, transfixleo, you should talk to a moderator and see if they can make adjusting the TV cable method of yours a sticky at the top of the forum, it would be a lot easier for you and others I think.

hey
i adjusted my tv cable over and over again. even tried it out of adjustment to see if it would help. I also tried pulling and pushing on the disconected cable like was mentioned on another post here. No luck! What else could the problem be?
I appreciate your help. Because as you know... tranny problems ususaly = $$$. And i'm on a low budget. So bringing it to a shop isn't a good idea for me. I live in a small town and they seem to milk everybody for whatever they can. (ummm we had to do this and this and this and...) Anyways...thanks again!

you should notice shift performance gain or loss by messing with cable, if not then you have a cable or valve body problem. i just adjusted ny cable per leo;s instructins and the tranny ****s badassed now it was having 2-3 upshift slip rpm spike up, and now its fine, this same tranny was dirven for 6 months with tv cable not even connected, was hard on it and the driveline and axle, but nothing is broken, i didnt own car whilke cable was off so not my fault

make sure you are adjusting cable exactly how leo says and if its not better after then, theny you may have bigger problem unfortunately.,
good luck

Or, you could submit it as a tech article. There's already an article on resetting the TV cable, but it's the by-the-book method, not transfixleo's. Both methods would be handy to have next to each other!
