gearing

right now i have a 82 camaro with stock rear axle, 2.73 it had a metric 200, we took that out and put a th 350 in it, i never drove it with the metric, but i was wondering if the final drive ratio would be different with the th 350 and what would it be? i can hit 65mph at 5400 rpm in first so i think its a lower ratio like 2.5 and also what gear would be a good gear for my set up, i was thinking 3.43, any advice, i have never done a gear swap before so any advice on that, also i dont have enough $ for the shop. i was thinking about getting a rear from a v6 and putting a locker in it, how much would that cost? or taking and tearing mine apart, and trying to do it myself with my dad, how hard would that be and how much would a posi locker be? thanks sorry for the long post, oh and for my motor i have a 300 hp 305, going to be a 350 hp 350

Doesn't the stock tranny have OD. If so then, I think the final drive ratio is .7 compared to the 1.00 with the TH350

I'm pretty sure that the final drive (third gear) ratio of the TH200(or is it a TH250?) and the TH350(and the TH400) is 1.0,AKA one to one. What I'd like to know is what did you have to do to put the TH350 into your car. My son and I are changing an '82 Berlinetta from 2.8/TH200(or is it a TH250?) to a 305,probably with a TH350.Did you get a TH350 with the ability to mount the torque arm? What car is your TH350 from and how did it swap in?What driveshaft fits? Any major problems?

summit sells a rear housing kit to install torque arm on in our cars and all trannies except o/d trannies have 1:1 final ratio.

T-5,. T-56, 700r4 and 2004r all have overdrive ratio in final gear

hmm noticed that i must go edit my sig, the 84 SE is getting cut up,

good luck!

yeah thm200c and 2.73 would be correct as std equipment, but we are missing the question he posted, oops

i owuld just find an axle from under a parts car, can get a whole V8 axle for cheap, these cars are very common in parts/wrecked form, i can get an H vin 83 maro right now for 100, with perfect doors and interior and all but no engine, theyre common, that would be awesome axle donor, was 700r4 car, so wil be 3.73 and 28 spline and all, but i dont need it, will go straight to crusher instead as did the SE and maybe the T/A also soon,..... poor cars.,,,, they are way too common yet, were just built yesterday practiclaly and wil continue to be beat on rusted out and wrecked and crushed until less are on the road finally. these cars for parts or not are way too easy to get, everyone and their dog and cat has at least one.,

good luck!

That 83 won't have 28 spline axles. 28 spline started in 89. But the ring gear is usually what breaks anyway. You take a chance if you buy a used posi--it may be worn out and alot of them aren't rebuildable. Use what you have, install the gears and posi you want, and all new bearings. It will last a long time if you do it right. I did mine around 5-6 years ago and it's never had a problem. Your first gear "65 at 5400 rpm" is about right for 2.73's, stock height tires, and a th350(2.52 to 1 ratio first gear). That puts 60mph at around 2100 rpm. With 3.42's 60mph becomes 2700rpm--just keep that in mind when you do the gear swap. Back when I put 3.73's and a locker in mine, I also had a th350 tranny. I ended up putting in a 700r4 because I couldn't live with interstate driving at that much rpm. A locker is way different than posi in how they work and what they do. I've had good luck with the powertrax locker I installed, you may want to check into that option.
