New Guy, Need Help

I bought a 91 camero rs this week, and I need some tips/ideas. It has the 700r4 auto tranny, and it does not have the high gear (overdrive) when it shifts into it, its like its in neutral. Does this have to be rebuilt, or is thier some lever, vacume, spring, or something I can do myself to fix this. I have mech ability, just dont work on trannys to much.

Hey there "new guy". Welcome to the boards.Let's get you off on the right foot, shall we??

CAMARO, with an "A"

Do a good check on the vacuum hoses. To check for leaks, spray a little carb cleaner around the connections and if the engine revs a bit, you have a leak. It just might not be adjusted right either. How many miles on the car? Indeed, maybe the trans is gone.

Where are you? I'm originally from Harrison on US 65, by the way....PIG SOOIE!!

Mmmm......

Strange situation for a rare "CAMERO" car.

Try with a lot of possible adjusts. If not , a rebuilt must be considered.

Denis.

Got it running

Got it running yesterday and drove it home. It will shift into the gear just I have to floor it to make it go in that gear. It does have some vacume leaks due to the break booster leaking, and some hoses do look quite dry rotted. Will take it for a spin after I get that stuff fixed. A counter tech said that their is a overdrive sensor in the tranny, and that could be bad. Is this true, if so, where is it at on the tranny? The repair book I have is not to helpful on the tranny. Baiscially, other then chainging fluid, take to a professional.

Overdrive sensor in a 91' tranny? I don't believe it.

Disassemble the tranny is the last, last step. At first, try with all the repairs and adjusts "around" the tranny (change the fluid and filter included. Fill the fluid at FULL mark, no "ADD", no at middle). It's the logical sequence.

Car: 89rs (previous 2.8)
Engine: 406
Transmission: 700r4 (for now)
and then adjust the TV cable like this...

Start here: To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the 'D' shaped lock button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting (The black housing that the metal cable is in will move forward). Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal still floored, press the 'D' button and pull the cable casing (the black tube) back as hard as you can (putting maximum tension on the metal cable) and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable casing so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.
