axles wabbling in and out of the rearend....

i posted about this clunking i heard a couple weeks ago...well i put it up on jack stands and pulled the axel outward and it made the same noise.....would i just have to change those clips that hold the axles in or would it b something worse.....also is it dangerous to drive on it like this?

This can't be a good thing dude

So you are saying that with the car jacked up you can pull your wheel out slightly thus making a clunking sound?

This is not safe to drive around on in my opinion... I am no expert but your side axles should have 0 play in the "in - out" direction. I would say that it wouldn't take much for that side axle to let go completely and pull completely out

Get it checked out .....

it's normal for the axles to move in and out a small amount ,say .020 or so. still i'd pull the cover and axles and take a look at everything.

By chance have you removed the clips that hold on the drums???
My friend had Mustang missing the clips off of the drivers side and it made a clunking noise.
Just a thought.

but stil the wheel mounted would torque the drum up against the axle drum flange, so.,,, cant be any slop there, only inside the axle at the clips ends of the shaft at the spiders, i assume is wear of the clips or the grooves in the axle shafts for the clips. the lock pin shaft is what is supposed to keep the shafts from going into the axle assembly too far(into the carrier asembly) and allowing the clips to fall off the grooves in the shafts. if they did then the shafts could slip right out right along with the drum and wheel/tire

good luck
