I am contemplating my next performance upgrade and I thought about a transmission shift kit. Has anyone had good or bad luck? What brand should I go with? In the Summit catalog, I see the B&M and TransGo kits and do not know which one is better or worse.

Also, has anyone used the B&M Trick Shift transmission fluid in our cars? Is it worth the money or just hype?

By the way, I have a 92 Z28 350 TPI. My only mods are K&N filters, MSD coil & wires, and a 180 thermostat with Jet low temp switch. I believe it has the 700R4...

Stick with the Trans-Go, it will solve the inherent problems with the 700R4 and improve the shift quality (of all the shifts) & the B&M will not do that (just harsh 1-2 part throttle shifts).

 

TransGo is definatly the way to go. There is a difference between "firm and quick" shifts, and necksnapping. You want your shifts to be firm and quick. Just slamming through the gears is too much.
However, I don't reccomend installing it yourself. I have seen to many people mess these kits up, then blame the kit

 

I recently installed one of ProBuilt's custom reprogramming kits. His are TransGo based.

It works nice! Highly recommended. Only deviation was the addition of the 3-4 upshift valve/sleeve.

It is something that I should have done a long time ago.

I have lost 2 700r4 to that worthless kit
i istalled the b&M with the option of street /strip and the trans did shift well and hard it was the very sloppy down shifts from any gear above first if you steped in it ..it would rev-up (like it was in N ) and then jump in gear after a few (like 3 times ) of this the trans went to self destruct then i had it rebuilt and it did the same i question'd the tech that rebuilt it and he said that we was not able to restore the trans back to oem because of the shift kit . when i called B&M they told me they hold no responsibility to this item because it was never ment to down shift because it was ment for track use only ( this is not said in the istrutions ) so dont use the B&M ...................and the B&M trick shift fluid ...its crap its just type F fluid with some additives ( type F will always make a chevy trans shift harder because of the diffience in weight and frition coafisiont ...not worth the money i will never use anything B&M again

 

I ran B&M Trick Shift two years in a row- I change my fluid yearly. I didn't notice any difference. If anything, it was more of a pain in the butt- the B&M Trick Shift is blue. Combine that with red trans fluid, and what color do you get? Brown. What color is burnt trans fluid? Brown. Yep; you can't tell if your fluid is good or bad by looking at the dipstick anymore. So since I felt no improvement, I stopped.

Also, an FYI- if you do go with the B&M kits- and I wouldn't- don't even think about buying the B&M TransPak for $50. For our 700r4's, it's the exact same kit as the $25 shift improver kit! Know what the big difference is for our 700r4's? The Transpak comes with a $25 filter. You can buy a trans filter locally for $10. I have the B&M Shift Improver Kit in my car, installed it myself on my garage floor- then two years later, I found out that they're not good for the trans. When I rebuild this trans, I'm yanking the B&M kit, and putting TransGo in.

I'm not totally against B&M; I have a Console Megashifter, Supercooler, and the 4-3 kickdown kit, and haven't had problems with them. But if anything, look at the difference in cost between the B&M Shift Improver Kit and the TransGo kit. One is $25, one is $120-- I think it all comes down to "you get what you pay for".
