limits of first gear in a 700-r4

ok im in a big argument with my dad, when im in first gear at WOT, around 4000rpm's, it will just like die, then a split second later it will come back to life. my dad thinks its the "limits" of the first gear of my TH700-r4. he doesnt think that i can take 1st gear to 5500rpms. i just got the tranny rebuilt and it has the transgo shift kit in it, and a 2000rpm stall converter. what are the "limits" of first gear?

If you manually shift, and have a TransGo kit installed, you'll be able to hold first untill the motor blows up. Thats one of the pluses to the TransGo kit. Most stock 700's WILL shift into second, even when left in manual 1st. TransGo prevents that.

i take every gear to 5500rpm's and im getting this weird problem at 3500-4000...i cant explain it, its like it just stops for a millisecond, then comes back on. i think my total timing is coming in to fast, then the computer catches it and stops and kicks it back down which is causing my problem. were gonna back it off a few degrees and see what happens.

Mine use to do that too. Right around 4,800 rpms. Never could figure out what it was, but my guess was the computer as well.

Whatever your problem is, it's not "timing". I'd recommend you leave that alone.

There are no "limits" to 1st gear. More specifically, the engine won't hiccup at some RPM just because the trans is in first.

More than likely your little hesitation thing happens because of something to do with the secondaries of the carb; sounds to me like the air valve is opening too soon, which leans the motor out, which will make it sputter a bit, until the engine's airflow needs catch up to the carb's supply. Too little tension on the air valve causes all sorts of things like that to happen, including the infamous "Quadra bog".

The Q-jet can flow enough air for a 500 CID motor at the same RPM your 305 is capable of turning. The air valve is how it calibrates itself to your motor size. Even as it comes from the factory, it will flow way more air than that motor can ever use, in its stock form (heads & cam). It hardly needs any modification for a 350 either; its stock 625 CFM more or less is enough air for a 350 at 6500 RPM, which your intake will prevent from ever being a useful condition anyway.

Ohkay, got a question then... I can hold 1st to any RPM, always could, still can. Was this an '86 700r4 thing? I've never had the trans upshift by itself if I'm manually holding a gear.

I installed the B&M Shift Kit (yeah yeah I know, back then nobody knew about it's problems).. but I was able to hold 1st even before the kit, back on my original (1st of 3rd) transmission.
