Stay 9-bolt OR Go 10-bolt

My first question is. Did GM make a 10-bolt Rear, WITH discs, that will fit my 89 IROC, our thirdgens, and if so how common are they, what did they come on?

. My 9-bolt needs new bearing, seals, posi-unit, and might as well add gears for fun. But the price to fix these Rear ends, makes this decision hard to swallow.

So I am debating whether or not to just get a hold of a 10-bolt and rebuilt that with all the goodies. I want to swap out my gears anyway, and I could actually put in a solid limited slip. Hell I could even throw in new axles for the price of a few 9-bolt bearings.

So what do you guys thing. My car is an 89 IROC 350, daily driver, AND THE WHINING AND SQUEAKING COMING FROM THAT REAREND IS GETTING REAL ANOYING. How's that for whining and squeaking.

i am sorda in the same boat. my 9 bolt posi does not work, the original 3.45 gears have been changed to 2.77 gears for some *** unknown reason!!! 3.73 gears for this thing are 295 bux, and i have a 2 series carrier thanks to the original owner. not to mention the price of a new posi unit!!! i am defitnitley in the market for a 10 bolt with disc brakes and a nice gear ratio. i was so excited about this rear end when i bought the car, ( i knew it had 2.77's, but i DIDNT KNOW the posi didnt work) and coem to find out it is nothing but a money pit. i could trash 2 10 bolts for the price of refubing this piece of junk. i wish i could just find another 9 bolt, but they are few and far between. sorry for ranting, i would go with a 10 bolt if i were you.

Anybody happen to remember that article in CHP in July, how to intstall gears in a 10-bolt. They rebuilt a 10-bolt, axles, gears, and posi, some labor. for only 1000 bucks. From where I sit, looking at what i need in my 9-bolt. That 10-bolt is looking better.

Anybody else got any input. It would be greatly welcom.

Any experiences in swaps. Or anything at all.

Thanks.

i have a 9 bolt for sale. Everything works and it has the 3.27 gear. I want $275 for it complete from caliper to caliper including rotors. It would be pick-up only but I am 30 minutes south of chicago. If interested e-mail me at eighty4z28@wideopenwest.com

If you want to take off the cover and look at the gears, etc. I have NO problem with that.

Does anyone have any ideas where I could research this info on my own.

Anyone know anyone that knows someone.

Anything would help.

I was also curious,

The brakes are interchangeable, RIGHT?

I researched on building mine, to get the carrier replaced was like 600 bux. There is a link here (on thirdgen) that has shims to tighten up the limited slip diff. I helped my buddy with his 89 9 bolt, bearings, seals gears etc..we got it together forjust over $550. I've never seen a 9-bolt break, there was a low 11 sec car here that ran one. Although the posi was trashed (big supprise).
anyway I wouldn't waste the money to build a 10 bolt, they just plain suck, unless you invest a ton of money into them. Just my 2 cents...

That thousand bucks IS IF you do it yourself. I did it, but wouldn't do it again. If I had it to do over it'd have a 12 bolt under it. just my 02.

But do you two get change back if the question was "A penny for your thoughts?"

I believe Stephen 87 Iroc had a 9 bolt running high 10s with 3.27 gears on his dragster. Sounds mighty tough to me!

Im running high 11's with a 9-bolt and 2.77 gearing... of course the posi doesnt work anymore... *sigh but I noted if I backup about 10 feet before I do a burnout both tires spin, it sort of locks the posi or somthing. i guess its "on its way" out. both tires still spin during the 1-2 shift chirp and around corners... and it hasnt realy BROKEN yet. thank gawd...
