HELP!!! tranny going out and i am poor college student

The title pretty much explains it. The car is a 91 Camaro RS, 305 V8 with an automatic tranny. This is what its doing. The first shift from 1st to 2nd is pretty good, but when the tranny goes to shift from 2nd to 3rd, it just doesn't shift. The engine revs up for a couple of seconds, and then finally the tranny shifts. What could be causing this and what is the solution. BTW, i changed the tranny fluid and filter back in December, and have only driven it maybe 6000 miles since, so i doubt thats the problem. I have a camaro parts car that has a good automatic tranny in it but its a V6 car, if i had to, could i use that tranny to replace the one in my driver?

60* v and sbc have differant bolt patterns. not sure but i think the internals are the same, but a lot of the soft parts you wouldn't want to swap. have you checked line preasure? might want to consider a trans cooler too, but i'd say that's like shutting the gate after the cows get out.

Yeah, i have already installled the tranny cooler a couple months back. One of the cooler lines going into radiatior was stripped so i went ahead and put the cooler on. I got the big cooler put on there, its actually recommended for extremely heavy duty hauling applications, but i figured that it would work just as well on my car, since i have very few mods anyway.

Must be. I guess the right term for my tranny problem is slipping. Because, it disengages as though its going to shift, but doesn't, and the engine revs go up because i still got my foot on the gas, and then it shifts into third. If my V6 tranny wont work, my only other option would be to rebuild it, myself. How hard is that going to be? I know a bunch of people that could help me that know what they're doing and i have a pretty good mechanical knowledge, so i need to know if it can be done. Thanks guys

sounds like the clutches in the tranny are going south on ya',or possibly the torque converter, when you changed the fluid and filter, how much sediment was in the pan? (a little is normal)

ok if my tranny was broken why would i be able to floor my car and lay tire and my car shifts fine all the time except the shift after 60 mph? is it maybe just my torque converter? how can you tell if its good or bad? I am gonna change my fluid this weekend

your 3-4 clutch pack is out. Your 1-2 is fine, that is why you can acellerate untill it is supposed to shift to 3rd, then it neutralizes. It is not cheap to get these rebuilt, or at least not for me it wasn't. It would be cheaper for you to get a used tranny out of a yard.

it's not your 3-4 clutch pack or any other clutches in the transmission. second gear is applied with a band. so if your looking to solve the problem, look twards the band or the servo. by the way your describing it to me the band is worn and there is nothing you can do but change it. and if your gonna pull out the tranny, you might as well rebuild it. and by the way your V6 tranny won't bolt up, also it won't hold up to being beat up by a V8.

no, second gear is fine, it is when it goes to third there is a problem. Second and fourth are on the band. that is why some people have only first and third gear. that is not the problem here

His does not shift to third soon enough. That is because the clutch is very worn out. it will only shift when the rpms have reached high enough to negate the ammount of slippage.

No matter what, you need shop time Berlinetta.

hey guys! I just got some damn good news. I was talking to a guy that teaches body shop at one of the local trade schools and he said he would talk to his friend about doing the labor for my tranny. Apparently this guy teachers tranny work for a living and would rebuild my tranny for free as long as i provided the parts. About how much is a decent rebuild kit gonna cost me. I dont want to rebuild with stock parts but at the same time i ain't building a race tranny either. Thanks a lot

www.northernautoparts.com has Transtar kits for $102 for the
700r4. Good stock-quality parts with no hype or BS at a good
price

That's awesome! Maybe he'll let you help, too. My suggestion was going to be that you should get a junkyard trans and drop it in for cost reasons... but if you can get it rebuilt by a teacher for free, go for it!!!

And yeah, bellhousings are different between v8 and v6 (smaller). Internals are, for the most part, the same, but they interchange. (The v6 700r4's got some parts that were weaker than a v8's.) As proof, there's no difference between a rebuild kit for a v8 700r4 and a v6 700r4.
