Best Advise on rear end

The rear end is still stock in my car (2.73 gears)and i want to upgrade that next. I was thinking on going with 3.43 gears but with a 5 speed i might want to go with 3.73's not sure on that yet, but from what i understand i will have to change the carrier in the rear also so i might just want to go to a junk yard and pull the rear out of a Z-28 or IROC that's compatiable with my car. Anyone got any other options that they can give me? And i am on a budget here. Thanks !

you can buy gears for your carrier, look in jegs catalog. it'll say something like y:yy ratio gears set for x:xx and numerically higher(or lower) carriers. what they do is make the ring gear thicker so it all works.

I'm going through the same crap, & personaly I would buy a good quality 3 series carrier (after market), along with Richmond 3 series gears.

In fact, the more I learn about these POS 7.5/10 bolts, I'm saving money on my credit card to get a 12 bolt ($2000, BUT I won't be replacing a rearend any time soon ) !!!

BTW: If your 5th is lower then 1.00 ratio, then I would go with a 3.73!

Well, if you want to go out of town with your car (assuming it isn't a strip only project) I'd go no higher than 3.42.

Even with overdrive, I'm turning 2400 rpm at 70 mph on the highway with my 3.42s. 3.73s would be unbearable at highway speeds, IMO.

Guys I have 2 series 3 carriers and 2 series 2 carriers and the following gears, 2.73, 3.42, and I think the other is a 3.2x. If anyone is interested make me an offer. Thanks. Also I just acquired a 4.11 if interestd. Jeff P.

Personally I'd upgrade the internals in your housing...axels, maybe some richmond gears...etc. I'd go with 3:23s or 3:42s. Both would work well with a 5 spd and auto. If you plan on highway runs, 3:73s aint gunna cut it.
