syn ATF or Syn gear lube?

I am looking for better reliability not performance. should i get the gear oil or the ATF. My friend who has a mustang says that he uses ATFin his 92 LX, but I got a NWC and he has a WC.

I just want the tranny to hold up to my TFS ported heads, and 284 XE cam. I know oil won't prevent anything if i am stupid with the car, but I want something that makes my chances lower of busting the tranny.

i'm running amsoil gear oil in my WCT5, gm says atf. they go back and forth on ATF or gear oil without making any changes in the trans.

Hi Dan,

Well, I say you should run ATF, but that won't stop you from killing your tranny. What's gonna kill your tranny is putting the stress of 350 ft-lbs or more of TQ on it. It's just going to shear the teeth right off of 3rd gear, most likely. Considering you're working with a tranny rated at 235? ft-lbs, It's going to die, quickly.

See if you can get the WC from the original owner. That'd hold a while longer, but you're going to need something a lot more stout. Mustang guys go with Tremec 3550s, TKOs, TKO2s, and T-56s. I don't know which will fit in yours. I'd think you could do any of them with the right bellhouse, yoke etc...
