Question about replacing steels

Do you absolutely have to replace the steels when diong a rebuild? If so why? Do they wear? Or is it just a good idea? Also, would a 3/4 clutchpack with 9 frictions and steels make that much of a difference or is the stock 5 friction pack enough for a stout street application? Thanks

You can use the Borg-Warner Hi-Energy clutches in the 3-4 clutch pack for additional capacity. If you do this right you can install 8 BW Hi-E clutches here, this should be more than enough for most applications. There are other things that can be done while the transmission is being rebuilt to ensure the success of this project, let me know if I can be of help?

I looked up some old posts about how you set up the 3/4 pack with the 8 clutches but you didnt specify the sizes of the other plates involved like the pressure plate. Something like .060 for the clutches and .080 for the steels and .040 clearance but nothing about how you arrive at these clearances. Will the stock pressure plate come close to this or am I gonna have to shop around to get a plate to work. Obviously Ill be measuring this so Im just kinda looking for a ballpark on this one. It would be nice if all I had to do was change the clutches and steels. And you never did answer my post about what plugging the hole in the separator plate would accomplish (the one next to the 3-2 downshift i think) and what kind of pressure is behind it since you mentioned soldering it shut -but that seemed kinda weak to me if it sees any kind of pressure. I really appreciate all of your help too. Thanks!

To get the 8 clutch setup you need 8 BW Hi-Energy clutches (.080), 5 (.080) steels, 2 (.060) steels, and 2 (.128) pressure plates, and 1 (.062) snap ring. This should give you around .035-.050 clearence. Plugging the hole keeps the band from coming off to quick, which prevents spinup during the 2-3 upshift. The Corvette servo helps a lot here too.

Will the less expensive transgo kit include a plug for that hole? Ill be ordering it tonight. Seems like that hole is the pivotal key to the 2-3 flare along with the other parts. Its surprising to hear that too large of a 2nd feed hole will help cause this too. Too much pressure maybe? Perhaps that was why the 2 (larger -with checkballs) holes under the 2nd feed were enlarged on the backside of the pressure plate from the ***** trying to force their way outward.

Stock you should have 7 clutches. I think the 5 clutch setup was only in the v6 cars.

Actually, stock uses only 6 clutches, w/ some V6s using 5.
Borg Warner and Alto are now making kits with 9 clutches in them. I have tried both. The Borg Warner kits usually take some work to get the proper clearance, the Alto Red Eagle kits usually drops right in and the clearance is good. The Alto kit also comes w/ Kolene steels.
