Tranny back together...what went wrong?
Tranny back together...what went wrong?
Ok, I decided (regretfully) to put one of these GM Transmission Repair Kits that are equipped in the B4C's. Without instructions and no prior experience with trans (exc filter change) I struggled. I eventually came across the Transgo Shift Kit instructions that gave me an exploded view to reassemble (which was good because I had a couple pieces switched around!!) and got everything back in the car. It starts off normal with light throttle, shifts to 2nd, and then when it shifts to 3rd it just drops out. If I manually shift 1 and 2 seem ok, but when left in 2nd and accelerating it deffinitely slips there too. TV Cable is adjusted correctly. Could one of my checkballs moved during installation? There were extra checkballs in the instructions that weren't in the valvebody when I dropped it, but a local tranny shop said to go by the diagram and I'd be fine. I also dropped the 3/8 ball while assembling and temporarly lost it (until assembly was complete of course), but I just ignored it since the instructions I had said it wasn't important. Any other ideas?
I took it apart again to investigate (a little cleaner & quicker this time!). One checkball had moved during installation so I corrected that. I dissassemble the TV and reassembled it to make sure it was correct. As far as being indexed correctly, it only seems to fit one way. Pressed all of the way back the pin passes through a small passage (opposed to an indentation/groove like the others). Seemed to function normal so after a careful inspection I reassembled and........suprise, same as before! What about the accumulator?? In the transgo instructions it shows springs above and below the piston....mine didn't have any when I dissasembled originally..?? From bottom up I have the housing, a sleeve, piston, metal seperator plate, piston, another sleeve. Does this seem to be the correct order? There is also one of the checkballs right by this configuration. The fins of the piston face the seperator plate on both sides. I'm planning on taking apart again, but I don't know what I'm going to do different!!!
The car has a B&M shift kit so I called B&M...turns out there are some different checkball requirements with this kit so I'll try that tonight. Taking this thing in and out is getting kinda old...but it's also getting pretty easy!!
AFAIK, those Caprice Police package "repair kits" were only for cars with auxilary valvebodies. I know I put one in an '86 and lost 4th gear because of it. Took it back out and it was fine.
As for the accumulators, they have been re-assembled podunk style, so it doesn't matter which way they face, they are effectively disabled, thanx to those sleeves.

great...that figures! I've already pitched the old parts!!!! Now I have to go digging for a 3-4 valve to replace mine? Will GM even sell those individual parts? I guess I walked into a world of hurt on this one! I followed the B&M instructions for the checkballs (which was where they were when I initially pulled the valve body) and still no change. So now I don't even know what to check next. It's already apart and waiting my next attempt. Now I need to figure out where I can get a stock 3-4 valve assembly on top of it all!
I found a stock 3-4 sleeve and replaced the GM Kit's, still same problem. I think I've reached the end of the road on this one. I even brought the valvebody to an automatic trans shop and had them look at it...they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it and had no idea what my problem would be. At this point I'm thinking new trans!
