used gears?

ok i wanna put some gears in my 91 rs auto tbi 305 im not sure which ratio to put in 3.42 or 3.73 and also im lookin at a set of used gears is there a problem with using them i hear that there can be a problem with setting up the used gears (wear patterns) durability wise so any gear heads.... out there please let me know im new to the gear game so any help would be appreciated!!!!!

First of all, what transmission are you running? If it is a T-5 I'd say run the 3.42's.....if it were a auto/aod I'd say 3.73's.

There is nothing wrong with using a used set of gears. There may be some problems with how they were set-up before you got them, but a good diff mech will know what he/she is looking at. It takes years of experience to know what your really looking at and how to make them work, so I would reccomend that you go to a place that is known for doing rear-end work.

im runnin a 700r4.... i have someone lookin to sell me a set of used 3.73's for 75$ or i was thinkin i could get a set from a v6 3rd or 4th gen but there only 3.42's so i think with your advice ill take the 3.73's........ how much do you think i should pay a shop to do the install?? since i saw your profile and you seem to know what your talkin bout' i appreciate your reply cause i really know nothing about gears so thanks again:hail: :hail: :hail: :hail:

Well out here I get anywhere from 275-350 (labor) depending on what has to be done. 275 for a gear swap and up to 350 for a full pop, (new/used gears, bearings, posi install).

Maybe I just completely missed it, but don't waste your time and/or money swapping the gears unless you are gonna install a posi too.
