New 6 speed $1550 good deal?

I just started working on the auto to 6speed swap for my 91 Z. I checked an online oem parts dealer, and got the price $1550 for a new unit..... that sounds good to me. Any one know why that isn't a good way to go? I know I will still need a donor car for clutch change over items, and misc, but that price is not that much more than I was quoted from the bone yard, for a mystery trannie that they didn't have. This is my first post, but I have been viewing for several years. I love this site!!

That sounds like a fair price to me!

When you do the swap let me know!, I'm in the process of going from a T5 to a 200r4. I need the entire Shifter assembly and console lid

Thanks,
Brendan

It may be a pipe dream.......... I have a call in to the dealer to check it out. I just got another quote back from a different dealer that was much higher, but the first place had it listed as a "transmisson assembly" ??? We shall see.

I found a T-56 From a 1999(98?) WS-6 trans Am complete with clutch, pressure plate, shifter, Slave cylinder etc... Everything except crossmember for my car for $1600.
It has about 50,000 Miles on it though, so its not new..

If you want more info, I can Tell you where it is and you could buy it instead of me, Im not planning on a 6 speed anytime soon.

that's a good deal. my dad works at GM and even with his discount, I couldn't get one new from a dealer for under 1600.

Kingtal0n, I would go for that but I think it's from a LS1 car and won't work on a third gen. Am I right?

it should work, maybe with an LT1 bellhousing.

Most of us that went with used transmissions got the entire swap done, with all related parts, under the $2000 mark. If you pay that much for just the gearbox, which I am sure is all that that amount will get you through GM, you will likely clear another $1000 in the rest of the parts needed to get the car down the road.

Hey.

I have been considering almost exactly what you did with your ride for my Formy, LT4 Hot and all. I was wondering how the combo works out for you, especially with 3.42s and the tall first gear in the `56. This is probably neither the first nor last time you will be asked, since (I am willing to bet) your .wav is on a HUGE number of PCs on 3G. I can only imagine how the car sounds during a full run, but wanted to know about driveability, especially since I currently run 3.23s and am on the fence about what exactly to do if/when the TH700 says sayonara (115K on the whole car now).

Sorry for the chapter. heh

Peace,

K

PS How about a few .wavs of that sucker rowing through the gears? As it is I play the current file to motivate myself to work on all my cars. haha

MATT87 your engine sounds alot like mine, although Im running 303/313 duration (234/244 @ .050) I'm wondering if its because of your LCA or what. What are you full cam specs if you dont mine me asking?

OH and the T-56 is actually setup perfectly for a thirdgen, you just need to fabricate / create your own crossmember to hold it up.

Wow, thanks for the compliments KenV . I don't have any more wavs of my car as of right now, but I can try to take some more one of these days.... I don't know how a full run would sound from inside the car with my crappy laptop mic though.... There were a few vids taken of my car in the last couple of weeks though..... I did a few... ummm.... uh-hm.... tire wear experiments and did a little exhibition run with a blown 2001 Mustang GT. The guy with the tape of that stuff is working on making some digital copies of it. He is also working on a club video that will be a compilation of footage from a bunch of MNFBC member's rids. I will put up some links when I get them. There is some footage of my car on the video for the MNFBC's Performance Driving Experience track event at Brainerd International Raceway this past summer (there is a link on our page in the Media section, there are two red GTAs in the vid though, mine is the hardtop with 17" 5-spokes.....) I still had the 700R4 in there at that time. The vid is like 20Mb though.....

As for how the combo works, I really like it. I have a fully siamesed setup on my 355, and with the LT4 HC, it pulls very well right up to 6000rpm. The only thing I really don't like is the 3.42 gears. They are just a bit too shallow for me. First gear seems to run forever at times. I have 3.73s and an Eaton just waiting to go in until I have the $$$ for the install kit. I talked to a lot of the 4th gen owners in the MNFBC and the ones with 3.73s said it really helps out on the low end. I can't say it will stay like this forever though.... I have my eyes on a 383 rotating assembly and a bigger cam..... .

King.... I really don't know what the exact specs on the LT4 HC are besides the published 218*/228* duration @ .050 , .525"/.525" lift with 1.6 rockers with a 112* LSA. GMPP seems to keep the exact specs to themselves. If/when I pull my cam out, I will probably bring it down to TPIS and have them throw it on their cam doctor to get the full scoop on the cam. I have gotten quite a few questions regarding the cam as far as the event timing and whatnot but I don't know if anybody knows for sure what the full specs are. It does seem to sound a bit more aggressive than those specs suggest it should.

Also, the LS1 T56s will not work with a standard SBC engine. There are differences in the input shaft and clutch setup. You must have an LT1 T56 setup for it to work on a standard SBC.

then maybe it is an LT-1 setup. The site is Thirdgenresource.com
its one of our sponsers, they are the ones that have it in stock. According to them, it will bolt right into your F-body thirdgen.

That helps quite a bit.

Thanks for the information Matt. In the back of my mind I was thinking of just adding .73s to the rear end rebuild regardless of trans choice since I plan to airtool the bejeezus out of my stock intake and add siamesed runners (to pass visual here in CA), following up with the best cam I can force to work (to pass the CA sniffer... this pattern sucks out loud).

I will check out the video on your club site, and look forward to seeing your upcoming vids. Until then, it's back to your idle file. heh

Thanks again, peace
