shift linkage problem (700-r4)

alright i've got a 91 z28 (auto) and recently i had to put in a new shifter cable, both cables looked identical and same length, but everytime i adjust the linkage, and then get in the car to "test" it. i move through the gears and when i get into park, the tranny is in reverse, and i have done adjusted it to many times to count and i dont know why it does it. i can put in in park under the car, and get in the car and hook it all up wheres its in park in the car too, but when i try it, it does the same thing, after i take it out of park it wont go back in. any suggestions? is it possible that its to short, even though they both seem the same length (the old and the new)? any help would be appreciated, thanks

The overall length of the cable isn't going to change anything, it's how far the cable moves inside the sleeve that matters. All I can think is you're doing something wrong. Is the nut moving inside the slot when you tighten it?

I have the same problem also. I have adjusted it plenty of times, and tried to fix stuff, but it just won't work. If I throw the lever into the park position hard enough, it goes into park, but other than that, I just use my Ebrake now. When it is in different gears, the shifter is loose too. It doesn't lock itself from gear to gear so I can wobble the shifter forwards and backwords while driving.

How are you trying to "adjust" the cable? Are you loosening the nut, puting the shifter and the manual shaft in neutral and then tightening the nut?

I did that, but no matter where it goes, it doesn't help, in fact, at its "tightest" setting, it doesn't even reach. Its been a real pain in the ***.

Sorry to bring up a dead thread, but I have a possible solution to the shift problems mentioned. Check where the cable attaches to the shifter and make sure the little plastic tabs are not broken.

Just for info

I know its old thread but thought I should put in my 2 cents anyway.

I bet your problem is the sleeve is broken. If you pull back the boot you will see a plastic sleeve, check to see if that has broken.

Just a thought.

Also make sure that the shifter is in neutral and the trans is in neutral when you do the adjustment.

Yes it makes a difference.
