Thats all I gotta say is DAAAAAAAAYYMMMM what a difference. Went to the shop earlier at 9PM EST and picked my car up. Got into the ride and felt the shift gates. They are alot closer than the T5. Went for a lil' drive to So I booked home and then took mah friend to the bank and went to go look for some runs..lol. Went on Capital Expressway and a new GT stang finds me. He pulls to the side of me and revs. I decide to barely give a rev back but it was hard to hear my exhaust over his. Light turns green...I get the stang on the holeshot by at least 1 car and a half...hit 2nd Im still pulling a tad...3rd gear hes at least 3 cars behind. I bet he was shocked. I think the the T56 keeps me more in power band and shifting thru the gates feels better than the T5 I think. But yeah just sharing my first night with the 6 spd and I have no regrets with the purchase.

How much did it cost you for the swap? Also what are you running under the hood?
Daym..it costed me an awful lot...about 3300.
Only a stock 305 with the exception of k&n and 144,000 miles. Stock headers, no TB bypass, nothing. Other than that Borla and gears.

What gears do you have? 3.42? I've had the T56 in my car for over 2 years now and I still love banging gears. I swapped from an automatic though so I have the stock 3.23 gears. I've had 3.73's sitting here for 6 months now but never got around to installing them. That will change though over the Christmas break. The T56 really needs at least 3.42 gears or higher. Even when I still had the TPI, the car would bog when taking off in 1st. I can't wait to get these 3.73s in so I can really get in the powerband of this new motor (6500 rpm shifts!!!). I'm even debating of whether or not to sell these and get some 4.10 gears. That may be a bit overkill for the street though, even with 6th gear. Congrats on your install.

Ive got a 92 Camaro Rs 5-speed and was looking into taking out the 305 ( only 78,000 miles on it.. might try and swap into my dads ranger
... ) and dropping in a nice 350. I was going to do the T56 swap as well. WOuld it be better to do the tranny swap 1st then the new engine or other way around??? I have no clue what gears im pretty sure im going to have to get a whole new rear end (most likely a moser 12 bolt ) and wanted some advice on these subjects. Also i think im going to need a whole new clutch assembly b/c mine feels REALLY weak, it doesnt pull the car very well when i just let off the clutch slowly. Does anyone know what goes good in a 3rd gen with the T56? The car is completely stock except for K&N w/ Open Element and Y-Pipe Flowmasters. Thanks for your help.

If you want to go fast now, Id get that new 350 in there. The T5 you have in there right now will hold up purdy good, thats if you dont beat it to death. If you think your gunna have well over 320 hp id upgrade to a TKO/T56. Of course the T56 is a big buck swap compared to the replacement T5, but if you can get a fairly good deal go with the T56. Its different from the ole T5 and not too many people have them in their thirdgens. The last thing Id upgrade is the suspension. Jus wait til that 10 bolt breaks than upgrade. After doin all my mods to my car the last thing I shoulda done up was the rear end. But that what I think. As for clutch, I know people have been happy with SPEC clutches and Centerforce DF. My Centerforce holds good but If you run the crap out of it like I do at times, I notice slippage..but that could be from me not breaking it in properly. People have different experiences with parts. The way I modded my car.
I thought from working from the ground up...prolly the best way to mod but most time consuming..
1)Suspension
2)tranny setup
3)Motor
If I can do it all over again..
1)Tranny Setup
2)Motor
3)then suspension
Its purdy much up to you, do you wanna go fast now? If so drop that motor in there.

the aftermarket T56 comes with the VSS thingy...well i believe thats what its called. so it purdy much jus plugs in and the speedo works....for the regular T56 i dunno exactly how that works out. try a search im sure it you'd find exactly what your lookin for.

Can you break that $3,300 down a little more so we can get a better idea........thanks.......

I'm guessing its with installation also. Cause I bought everything needed for the swap and then some for like $1900.
Right now I have 3.73 gears happy to hear that its a good gear to use with the T56. Hmmmm...I'm considering swapping out the 3.73's though maybe for some 4:10's...or maybe even lower.

3300 has to include paying someone else to do it, cause i rounded everthing up for around 1800 with a $400 spohn torque arm/crossmember. i did the install myself though. took me a week of off and on working on the car but when i got the car going it was very rewarding. im running 3.42 right now but i am going to run some 4.10s or possibly 4.56s

As for the reverse lockout, I have heard that they just don't have one at all on the aftermarket ones but I haven't verified that. I myself have yet to wire up a switch or anything to mine and use my massive right gun to just overcome the lockout solenoid when shifting into reverse
.....Senior Member
I used the dakota box, and i wired up a toggle switch for reverse. I'm gonna be swapping to 3.73's or 3.55's because the 4.10's aren;t allowing me to go any faster in 4th gear without switching to 5th in the quarter. I'm gonna be trapping somewhere near 120 this coming spring season, so take that in consideration when changing your gears.

Yeah, I have the 3.42s in my car right now but have 3.73s and a fresh Eaton posi awaiting install. I thought about all around performance on the street and road course shifting when I picked the 3.73s.... The guys that run the tracks that I will be running say the 4.10s make for a lot of shifting and sometimes less top end pull.

2500 for the tranny
800 for the rest of the parts..TA, crossmember, blah blah
500 to install
cause theres no damn way imma lift that T56 with my bulging bicepts and drop it in my car. I aint no weightlefter and i have no time with the job that i got. hahaaso u add all this up...it comes up to 84542523452 dollars. yes i know what ur thinkin but everything works fine in my car. its even goin to be more cash spent on my motor but money aint a thing.

That price seems about right. I really want to do the swap to replace the 200R4, but have very little money. I researched it for a ton of hours, then everything came togeather except the $$$.

my speedo is cable driven, the dakota digital product (is this what you mean http://www.dakotadigital.com/Detail....rtNumber=SGI-5 ) wont convert an electrical signal from the trans to a mechanical/rotational signal for my speedo will it?Originally posted by Matt87GTA

I love my T56 in my GTA. I'm running 3.42's but might go to 4.10's after my intake and heads this summer. I used the dakota digital box as well. Works great. I had my revers lockout hooked up to a toggle switch but the solenoid went out so I just push it to the right kinda hard and go up. It doesn't take much hand pressure to override the lockout! All in all I have less than $2000 in my setup. Probably pretty close though, and I found some good used deals in the process. I recommend this to anyone that can afford it. Nothing better than a 350/383 3rd gen with a T56 in it!!!!!!
