My 700r4 is shifting wierd. Just started

My trans has always shifted good, and I have put about 10,000 miles on it. The trans was just rebuilt before I bought the car, SO it only has about 10,000 after the rebuild. Just yesterday it started shifting wierd like it want's to hold it in gear. I remember someone saying somethin about you are supposed to change the filter after a certain amount of mileage after a fresh rebuild, but couldn't quite remember how many miles it was. COuld my filter be clogged and this be what is causing the problem, or do you guys think it is somethin else. I want to go get the filter changed, I would do it myself but I don't have a lift or ramps and have never done one before. Is it hard, or should I just take it to the shop to get it changed. Is there any shops you guys recommend??? I want to get a shop that will do it right, and not half @ss my car. Does anyone have any recommendations. I am at Fort Meade MD.

Your filter should NOT be clogged, you you really don't have to change the fluid untill 30,000. Is it shifting later and harder? Is it all gears, or just one? A little more detail would help.

It is shifting later and harder in all gears. Seems like it tries to hold in until I let off the gas from in all gears and it shifts harder. I was told that after a rebuild your transmission will shave itself and you have to change the filter. Is that not true???

You'll get very small metal shavings as parts wear together, but most of that (if steel) will get caught by the magnent. I have only seen a handfull of clogged filters, but that was after catastrophic failures. If there is enough debris in the filter to clog it, don't waste your time w/ just a filter, cause it will have to come out soon, if its even still working

If its shifting later and harder, try adjusting your TV Cable first. Do a search on here, its been posted millions of times. Transfixleo's method seems to work the best for peple on this board over the stock method, so be on the lookout for his post.

My transmission started shifting normal agian. WTF!! COuld it just have worked whatever it was through or what???? I just don't understand. If it was my tv cable it would stay out of adjustment right. Maybe I should check and see if it is sticking or somethin.

The throttle valve (TV) on the early 700R4's was almost always a problem, if it sticks it can cause early or lates shifts, and can happen all at once, and yes sometimes it will fix itself. Trans-Go solved this with a self cleaning throttle valve & anti-sticking springs. This valve comes in all of their Shift kits. On the area of transmission fluid, if it looks burnt and or smells burnt do a "complete" change of the fluid along with a new Sealed Power (OEM) filter. If you check the fluid once a week and get familiar with the color & smell, you will know when it is time to change it. For example if you overheat the motor, tow a trailer, do something out of the ordinary, check the fluid to see how it is holding up. If you have an external cooler you will have a better chance of the fluid lasting longer. If after one of these examples you notice the fluid is slightly burnt, do a complete change "immediately", the fluid has just dones its job, chances are nothing has happened to the transmission itself. If you have burned the fluid badly though, then there could be damage. When the fluid is burnt, the lubricating qualities go down drastically, so a complete change asap is required to stop further damage.
