I was wondering if anyone has seen C-clip eliminator kits for the 7.5? If yes who makes them and how much do they cost?

Not that I have intentions (or the capability) of going 10.99 or faster in the quarter but call it piece of mind because I am presently running with a drum brake diff (= no axle retention if c-clip fails) and do not like the idea of seeing my wheel and axle suddenly showing up in my rear view mirror.

 

there aren't any, but you can use a kit for the larger 10 bolt rear and all you have to do is transfer a hole or two, drill and you're all set.

 

did they say disc brakes are ok for use as axle retention devices? i know there was a big argument about it a while back...

 

There was a debate about the rear disks awhile back. If I remember correctly they thought most tracks would accept them.

 

ede: I gather then that you have installed this kit before? If you did use the C Clip Elim kit for a 8.5 10 bolt on the 7.5 I have only one question. Did they interfere with the Parking brake arms or other mounting hardware of the 7.5 Drum brake setup?

I read some threads about the debate whether calipers are considered to be an axle retention device and somebody had concluded that it depends on the design of the caliper mounting bracket and whether it wraps aroound the outside edge of the disc or not. If it wraps around = Legal. Meaning that a simple caliper is not a legal axle retention device but a caliper mounting bracket AND caliper is. (10.99 classes) Makes good sense but makes even more sense to me at any performance level.

The caliper will hold a wheel on regardless of it's design. If an axle breaks at the wheel end, then no retention device will hold it on. An "axle retention device", NHRA terminology, is to prevent the axle from coming out of the housing if the tiny end that holds the c-clip breaks off. That will break before an axle breaks. Even if an axle breaks, it will be far inside the housing where the axle is usually the thinest.

Once an axle or c-clip retainer breaks, the axle has to pull out of the housing. Anything that keeps it inside the housing is considered an axle retention device which would include disk brakes. If a caliper can't hold the axle in, then there's something seriously wrong with the brake mounting parts and a broken axle is the least of your worries.

At 10.99 you need aftermarket axles anyway.

 

At 10.99 I wouldn't be gambling a 7.5 even with aftermarket axles. But since I am only expecting mid twelves this year I hope to get at least one reliable season out of the old diff. Just needs a little work on it first.

My question to all still remains;

Anyone install C-clip Elim kit on a drum 7.5?

If yes, manufacturer, pics, issues, info etc.. would be great.

Thanks for the info I'll check them out and at the same time try to resist the temptation to just bite the bullit and buy one of his 12 bolt diffs.

 

I know this is digging out an old thread that's 10 years old....but it's all still relevant and i wish I had some more answers when I was doing this research.

Quick background on my current situation:
I run the AEC car club in platteville wi and we own an 85 firebird
It has a built 350, built th350, and a 7.5" 10 bolt drum rear with 4.10 and a minispool.

The car is owned by the club so we don't have outrageous funds to spend on a 9". We understand the weaknesses of the 7.5" 10 bolt and at this point we'd like to cover our asses by putting c-clip eliminators in until we can afford a 9". We know we'll probably break a (stock) axle so we're just planning for when that happens! We also don't believe in disk breaks as axle retention devices but that is a different debate.


We weren't able to find any kits from Moser, Strange etc that were made for this year end so we ordered a Moser kit and we're trying to make them work.



The research I have done, I wasn't able find any kits specifically for the 7.5" 10 bolt (with drums or disks)

We're currently working on fabbing up a set onto our car. I'll post pics etc if/when it works.

If i remember correctly i got a Moser kit from Jegs. Not sure it is called a c-clip eliminator but that is what i always called them. They are weld on rather then bolt on. It basically turns your axle ends into like ford ends. When i purchased mine back in the 90's i ordered the axles with the bearing already pressed on 'had to remove them to install the backing plate' and the weld on eliminators, all as a kit. I used to abuse the hell out of this car but now not so much, anyway i have never had a problem with this setup. No noise or leakeage. Mine look sorta like this... 'pic from google'

 

Have you used this kit before? Or did you just post the first c clip eliminator kit from summit?


Nice yeah I've seen those axle tube end kits like that before. I'd probably actually prefer those kits over anything else because they make bolting on everything so dang easy. The only issue with that is the average thirdgen owner doesn't have access to a nice welder like we do so we opted to try a bolt on kit

 

I just posted the link. Mainly because is actually lists it for the 7.5/7.625. I have searched in the past and could never find anything, then searched again after seeing this thread and there it is.
