9 bolt ??

did all borg-warner 9 bolts have Posi units or did some of them come in "peg leg" versions ???

I bought a 85 T-A and it has a 9 bolt with drum brakes, the tech page says it probably has 3.23 gears if it were factory, does the tech page hold up as far as borg-warner goes ???

All 9-bolts were the high performace axles with Limited Slip used with 350's and some some 5sp 305's engines.

Some early BW 9-Bolts such as the 3:08 were drum & open rears.
Now I am saying that all 2:77. 3:27 & 3:45 had Limited slips in them.

well, It looks like I am one of the lucky ones (LOL), I got a B/W with drum brakes, open rear end and 3.23 gears.

this rear is from a 85 T-A, what spline count will it have ??

I have a 9 bolt posi with 2.77 gears from an older (89 I think), will the posi unit swap into the 85 rear end and the axles match up ??

maybe by mixing the two together I can get a 3.23 posi out of it.

I did say early year BW 9- bolts (82-86)mostly in Firebirds. Also, if you have a 3:23 rear it is not a 9-bolt ( ratio not made by BW) only a 3:27.
I can't reply to your other questions (3:23 ???).

I think you got it backwards, 9bolt.com says they have 3.23 gears and not 3.27, anyways, do all 9 bolts have the same spline count. I don't see anything on 9bolt.com that says anything about spline count leading me to believe that they are all the same 28 spline count. can anyone verify this for me.

Look a little closer. The factory option for the BW was 3.27. Miles is offering a 3.23 as an aftermarket option.

this is what i hat e about third gens, there is so much conflicting info out there.

now, I am the not so proud owner of a 9 bolt that has 3.27 gears and an OPEN DIFF, it is an 87 model as i pulled it from an 87 GTA, and it has the crappy early stlye disk brakes, yes a disk brake open diff 3.27 9 bolt, dont beleive me? come over and ill show ya the best boat anchor that is taking space in my garage

wait................since it is RARE?..... maybe its worth more??

Okay, I looked on my RPO codes and it says that I have a Borg and Werner 2.77. I know that I do have 9 bolts and disk brakes and my car is automatic.
Is this limited slip or a true posi. What I do know is that Every single time I have spun the tires I leave 2 patches. Also is this open diff or what. I don't really know the differance. And how rare is this?

the only "TRUE" posi is a spool or mini spool (only good for drag racing), everything else is some version of a limited slip dif. we all call them posi units but to be technical they are all limited slip. the 9 bolt B/W are not that rare and the 2.77 gears are great highway gears but suck for bottom end power. and open dif. (also called a "peg leg") will usually only spin one wheel.

That would be a rare combination since the G-80 rpo (Limited slip)
was a required option with that 9-bolt 3:27ratio with disc brakes. Can anyone else shed some light on this subject???

Note! Posi is GM's tradename for a LIMITED SLIP rear diff .

thats what i though, it is rare, but it doesnt matter to me cause a rare open diff is still an OPEN diff, does me no good, I paid 200 for the thing sight unseen, because i was told it was something it wasnt, then i had to rebuild the calipers, and put up with an open diff till i swapped my ten bolt back in the car. but now i have a zexel, and 3.73's so it all worked out good

screw 9 blots, to much hype. yes they are strong, but parts are way to much, im going with an 8.5 rear. lotta work though......?
