Practically everything with a motor bigger than a 350, from 65 to sometime in the 80s. Especially (but by no means exclusively) full-size cars, and trucks.

1964-1990 although they stopped putting them in cars in the early to mid 70's. Mostly found in pickup trucks and vans. Truck TH400's have a bolt on driveshaft yoke. You'll need a TH400 slip yoke from a car.
In 1991 GM changed the TH400 to the 4L80E. Many of the internal parts are the same except it has an overdrive and is computer controlled.

Installing a TH400 requires a new crossmember and a shorter driveshaft. It's not a direct swap to anything.

There are no cars with a driveshaft the correct length for a third gen with a TH400.
I think there's a conversion kit available for TH400 swaps. It will include everything need for the swap including a crossmember.
There might also be a FAQ on how to do the swap using and modifying a factory crossmember I think from a manual car.
You could also buy a Spohn torque arm and crossmember kit to do the swap.

There were many changes internally over the years. The best ones were 1970-71. All the internal parts are interchangable so you can mix and match the parts to get the best parts from all the years to build a very strong tranny.
Just make sure you get one with a chev bolt pattern. Most of the TH400's that were in cars have BOP bolt patterns.
