b&m shift improver kit...

i have an 85 iroc-z with a 305 in it. my trans is a 700-R4. i want to build it up a little by adding a shift improver kit to the trans, but i was wondering if that would iinterfere with my computer chip. i bought a chip from "fast chip" and it changed the shift points of my trans. now if i go install a shift improver kit, will that confuse my car even more? (and me)!

The 700R4 is not controlled by computer except for the torque converter lockup. I would use the Trans-Go Performance Shift kit, and pass on the B&M valve body kit. I carry everything that you need to do this. How did this chip change the shift points of this 700R4?

without the computer chip, the car was shifting from 1st to 2nd gear at WOT at about 4 1/2 thousand rpm. with the chip now, it shifts at around 5 1/2 thousand rpm. the trans-go kit includes what?

You changed nothing else but the chip and it changed the WOT shift points? It's impossible, the TV cable and governor control WOT shift points. If you changed TV cable settings, or changed governor weights, this would have an effect. Go to https://www.pro-built.net/index.cfm?...t&productid=82 and you will see exactly what is in this kit.

When I had the PR chip in mine it also changed the shift points. that was the first thing I noticed. When just cruising around town, when I had the gear in OD it my tranny would rarely go into OD until I was on a long stretch, I loved that, wasnt a constant OD, D, OD ,D.....and now that I removed the chip my tranny acts the same as stock...which I now hate..

Like ProBuilt stated, other than the converter clutch operation, the ECM and a 700R-4 have nothing in common. You could take a chainsaw and hack the ECM in two, slap a carb on the motor and as long as you maintain the same TV Cable geometry at the throttle linkage, the transmission will shift the same. There is simply more to it then what has been given.

Are we confusing TCC lockup with OD? Lots of aftermarket chips raise the TCC lockup speed to eliminate the "boggy" feeling while driving around town.

Like PB and GMT said the ecm has nothing to do with shift points. The B&M kit is a joke the mosy valueble thing in the kit are the gaskets and most DIY's screw the install up anyway and end up at a shop, no offence its true.

A free mod worth just as much as a B&M kit is adjusting your TV cable properly you can gain firmer shifts just by adjusting your cable to fatory specs. Since most people have never touched the TV cable it does strech over the years making the shifts pukey soft.

The cable is supposed to have a dummie proof setting where as if one were to over tighen it, it would snap back to the correct setting under WOT.

I dissagree with one part of the artical GMT linked to, the part about holding the gas pedel down. Holding the gas pedel is a more accurate way to adjust the cable since the movement of the gas pedle is what you use in the car to controll accelration/downshifts. You cant reach your arm out and pull the throttle linkage WO while driving, you are limited by the travle in the pedel but everyone to thier own. That procedure can leave the TV adjustment slightly tight or slightly loose. I suggest you try adjusting it both ways the way in the link and having someone hold the gas to the floor and see which one works best for your setup.

Is there a way to mark the cable to see if the adjustment was even needed or it actually did something?

Yes, use "whiteout" to mark the teeth and then remove one slot of paint for reference point.
