My car is at aamco for a transmission rebuild right now. It is costing me $1700.00. They say I need a new torque converter,shift kit, reverse drum,band,valve body,governer,and tc switch. The valvel body was drilled for an aggressive shift kit. I like the way it use to shift, but I don't want it to go back out after another year of runnin it. Has anyone dealt with aamco, or work at an aamco. What kind of job did they do for you??? Does this sound rediculous?? I would just go out and buy one, but I already owe them 400 for the dissassembly and reassembly(to find out what the problem was) THe guy says he has been building transmissions for 28 years, and he is building this one to hold up to my car. He seems to know what he is talking about. Is also going to put the sleeve on that stops the annoying shift from od down to drive when you get on it. Is that all the 700r4 requires is that sleeve, or is there more involved in it. Thanks for reading, and I appreciate all replies.

 

No way man, you're close enough to Delaware to hit DelTrans and get a better rebuild that will hold up to abuse.

 

AAMCO is like Maaco...they either suck or they did a good job. Depending who owns it, you're kinda taking a chance. If you know a reputable builder in your area I would go to them first. But if you have a good feeling about this AAMCO then you might be alright. The price seems about what they would charge with a TC and warranty. My IROC's first trans rebuild was AAMCO and charged me $1800...it lasted me 6 years.

FWIW-my Tahoe has a 4l60E rebuilt by AAMCO (I bought it like that) and it's working really well. The trans has about 20,500 miles on it. I've towed my IROC with it 2400 miles without a problem.

 

What were you thinking to take your car to those cr---ks.
Anytime they open a transmission up its a thousand dollars. Now you have learned a tough lesson about AAMCO. get your car out of there even haveing it towed. Run and don't turn back.

Well, like I said, the builder said he has been building transmissions for about 28 years. Didn't like the manager, he was an @sshole, but the builder was really nice and seemed to know his stuff. He said he wouldn't build it with a shift, because they could not warranty it like that. They offer a lifetime warranty, of course for a little extra. So, I will probably get the lifetime warranty because I plan on keepin the car. And, I am sure the the way I drive it the warranty will pay off. No, I don't rip my car around, but I DRIVE IT like a camaro is meant to be drove.

 

Kinda to late to turn back now. It will already cost 400 to open it and see what was wrong, then put it back in. Like I said though I plan to pay a little extra and get a lifetime warranty so it will pay off I am sure.

 

local shop here quoted me 1200 for a rebuild including r&r. i ended up getting a trans from gm for more money but with a better warrenty.

 

Ouch..this one's gonna hurt. I paid $650 for a complete rebuild from a local race shop..including TC, shift kit, and servo. Granted, that's the wholesale price he charges other shops (my engine guy asked his buddy the tranny guy to do it for his cost)....but I don't think it would have retailed for much more than 900....maybe 1,000. And that included R&R.
