700R4 vs. 350 Turbo Hydramatic

I'm getting an 89 Camaro tommorrow and I'm going to be swapping out the stock 305 for a 350. The car currently has a 700R4 in it that was rebuilt about 40k ago. I've also got a 350 Turbo Hydramatic (I think from the 70s) that was rebuilt about 5k ago with a B&M trick shift kit. As far as I know the 700R4 will work with the 350, but I was wondering if there are any advantages or disadvantages to swapping over to the other tranny. Thanks for your help.

Will

Car: 4
Engine: 6
Transmission: 5
Advantages = stronger (more durable), better gearing

Disadvantages = no overdrive, bolts right up to the engine but not to the car (requires modification to the torque arm system, at the least, a kit to mount it; and may need driveshaft length change)

what he said^

i just started going through a few 700R4's transmissions at school

there quite a few parts that need to upgraded to make this tranny handle real power

if you know what parts they are, then you can prolly either build a strong 700R4 yourself or have it built to your specs

some parts i know of off hand that need to be changed:
reaction sun shell (the splined part breaks off, losing 2nd, 4th, and reverse all at once)
3-4 clutch pack is weak (you can buy a kit that has more clutches for this pack, it inlcudes a smaller heavy duty piston, so you can fit all the clutches and have correct clearance)

i know there are other things, but i dont have any books or magazines handy

only thing i have ever heard needing real help in a TH350 is the sprag, the stock piece has only 16 elements, the heavy duty replacement has 34

now that i learned a ****load about automatics, i may very well rebuild my 700R4, just incase my junkyard th350 is garbage

not sure

not sure on your exact set up...but when i ripped out the old 200 out i put a th350 in. i used a kit from B&M and it just bolted up. i could use the original drive shaft from the Metric 200. But you will most likey need to change it or get it custom fit. go to the junk yard and grab a drive shaft from a metric 200 car. the B&M kit works for swapping out th700 and 200's out for the th350. only like 60-70 bucks from summit.

for a 9 inch tailshaft TH350 a 700R4 needs to be used
for a 6 inch tailshaft TH350 a metric 200C driveshaft needs to be used

let it be known that 6 inch versions are more common
