I just had my 4.10 gears set up in my 9 bolt, and they are whining!!!! for the first 10 minutes i drove it they were 100% silent, then out of nowhere they started whining a little, and it kept getting louder. Now they are about 10 times louder than the worst set of richmonds i've ever heard.

I'm assuming that their not set up properly so Monday i'm gonna take the car back up to my gear guy.

It doesn't make a sound on the decel, and i can't hear it under moderate/ hard acceleration, but it's wicked loud a low rpms (1500) and giving it just enough gas to keep a constant speed. When cruising it's very loud, but quiets down as you accelerate.

What the hell is goin on here? are my gears fried already? I only put about 12 miles on them. Gear oil is Valvoline synthetic 80w90. (2 jugs, think their qts??? can't remember.)

only 12 miles??? gears from what i understand take a while to set in. 150-200 miles. and no fast speeds. gears need to heat up and set a groove. when a shop puts them in they tell you be easy the first 100 or so miles. quick acceleration or high speeds will warp them. my bro had a 94 lt1 that he put 4:10 gears in and they messed up twice. both times his fault. i got mine installed followed the breakin procedure and they run great.

hmmm, everywhere i've ever seen says they need to be broken in for about 10 miles, but either way, i've not been to full thottle yet with them, nor have i been above about 70 mph...

I got mine done at Randy's R&P and they insisted on NO heavy acceleration for the first 500 miles!! That was to make sure they set properly.

New gears will get really hot the first few times you drive on them. I was told to drive easy for a few miles, then park it. Do the same for the next few days, gradually increasing the distance.

After about 100 miles, if no "weird things" happen, they should be good for a long road trip.

Setting the gears properly is frustrating when you get a new posi and can't light 'em up for a while!!

After 500 miles, change the diff. fluid also.

BTW, do you have a posi in your rear?? If you do, and didn't add the posi additive, they will make noise like that. Clutches are probably fried.

it's a 9 bolt, no clutches, but yeah the posi additive is in there anyway.

So is this fixable or am i dropping another 400 bucks for another gear set?

is it safe to drive around with it like this? the gear guy is about 30 minutes from my house, and i was gonna drive it up to him so he could hear exactly what was happening

my breakin procedure was this.
-drive 10 miles. park for 30 minutes
-another 10 miles. park for 30 minutes.
-10 more miles. park for 30 minutes.
-drive like a grandma for about 100-150 miles. no high speeds. like no more than 55.

it sucks. but if done properly you have nothing to worry about.
take it back to the gear guy and try to cut a deal. don't tell him he did a bad job. tell him to check to see if they are set right. if he knows they were then you are out of luck. buy some strange gears they are quiter. or you can always buy some gm gears although they are quite expensive.

guys i appreciate all your help so far but your not really answering my questions:

Is this thing gonna lock up on me if i drive it 30 miles to the gear shop?

Am i buying another gear set, or is this reversable?

what exactly happened? they warped?

thanks again,
Eric

I went through the same crap (actually 100 times worse but I'm not getting intot that right now).

The worst that is gonna happen is that you might break a few teeth and trust me, you will know when you do that...it will make a loud knocking sound from the rear end that gets faster as your gears spin faster.

Just drive normal for now, it's ok. But if you do somehow break teeth, then you should baby your car since the broken teeth are in there. Although I did drive mine for at least 200 miles that way...and sometimes I drove it hard...but I didn't care since my plans were to just get another rear end from the recycle yard.

Noisy gears Suck!!!! I hear you....It's emabarrasing to have friends in your car. Have your guy take a look at it to make sure they are lined up 100%. If they are, then that gear set you have is always going to be noisy...some are just like that. If they are not lined up properly, and he can't get them to line up properly, then you are falling into my horror story. Don't offer to pay anything towards another set...he needs to buy another set and put them in properly. Ask around or look around in here to find out what brand is quiet.

I think what has happened has been answered...either they aren't lined up right...or you just got a really noisy brand.

My Advice To Everyone: Go to a ring and pinion / diff shop to get your gears done...i don't care what kind of work your friend does in his shop...gears are very critical.

Just reply if you need more information from me.

So basically with the gears how they are i am at risk of breaking a tooth off the gearset?

Guess that pretty much sums up my questions,

thanks again everyone.

Only if they are not lined up properly and the only way you are going to know that is by having it checked out.

When I got my gears put in they would not line up because of a big accident in the past that slightly tweaked things out of proportion. It still lasted me almost a year though before breaking a tooth...and I drove it hard. (These were Strange Gears).

So don't worry about it.....they are very strong....just drive it with care to the shop asap and get it looked at. But don't delay because you don't want to cause irreversible damage.
