Who Turned off gravity? Trans won't drop

Well me and a couple friends were taking out the trans tonight, got the 3 convertor-flywheel bolts, and 5 bellhousing botls totally out and one bolt loosened all the way but cant get a hand on it to pull it out. Lines are disconnected, TV cable is dicsonnected, shifter is disconnected.
Only thing that isn't disconnected is the trans tube, could that be keeping it from dropping? I mean the thing wont even tilt down. I grabbed the tailshaft and pushed up so hat the convertor seperated from the fly wheel, and the flywheel will turn independently of the convertor.

What am I missing?

Chris

How about the torque arm? That should be about it, You didn't say but I am sure you already completely removed the crossmember.

Did you pull it back off the dowel pins?

Yeah I took the TQ arm off.

Dowel pins? I didn't know there were dowel pins, well that would do it, I didn't see any dowels on the new trans, I take it thats on the engine.

I could be wrong, but isn't the bolt holding the dipstick tube on going through the bellhousing to the engine block. Did you take this out? Also, did try to pull the trans. back towards the rear of the car and then lower it?

Even if that bolt were still in, I'd think the trans would've at least slid back, or tilted, or something! Plus the dipstick tube should've pulled out of the grommet at the trans. Weird. Hell I don't even think the dipstick tube or speedo cable or TV cable or shift cable or -any- cable would keep that heavy trans from falling.

When you jacked up the engine with a block of wood under the oil pan, did you jack it up really high? I wonder if you've got the top of the trans bellhousing mashed against the floorpan, and it's somehow keeping the engine and trans locked together. Try lowering the back of the engine a bit.

Be careful when it finally decides to fall...

Yeah Tom I agree, but I know when I pulled my 700R4 we had one bolt left in and it wouldn't allow us to slide the trans back far enough to drop b/c of the dowels. If the dowel pins weren't there it probally would have snapped that bolt right in two. But maybe he needs to lower it like you said.

The transmission tube won't keep it from dropping. I don't recall if its bolted to anything, but it attaches at the transmission with a grommet. You have to pull the transmission back away from the engine. There is a dowel on each side that holds the transmission onto the engine.

Yeah it was the dowel pins. I didn't know that they were there. I thought when the bellhousing bolts were off it would just drop.

I just finished bolting the new one up and bolting everything else that goes with it. Still have an hour of work left.

Thanks for your help guys.

Aww man....Now I'm jealous! All I can do is turn rain on and off!

LOL

Darned gravity, it never works when you want it to, but when you don't (Like when drunk and tripping over something...) look out!
