How do you change speedo gear?

I have the tailshaft off, and I need to change the gear for the different final drive. I got both the drive and the driven, though I forget which is which.
But I can't get the old one off, there is a clip, but it wont slide out.

Any hints?

The clip can be a pain, you need to push the tangs down so they will slide into the slot in the gear. You might need to encourage the gear a little with a hammer. Be gentle so you don't damage the plastic teeth.

when i changed mine i had a really hard time getting the drive gear off too. i ended up sliding a screwdriver under it and just breaking the thing off because i figured i didnt need it anyway. then i just tapped the new one in.

Thanks guys, I got the old one out and the new one on, but the clip will just slide out of the new one. Do I need the clip? THe gear is on there solid. I used a large slotted screwdriver and used a hammer against it at 3 points and moved it literally hunderth by hundreth of an inch. It took 15 minutes before it finally got to the the right point, and yes I did use some trans fluid to lube the shaft.

when i did mine i got a new clip because my old one was busted from taking it out. i would think it would be a good idea to see if you can get it to stay in there, just for safe measure. is the tab on the clip that sticks in the shaft broken? perhaps the gear you put on isnt lined up with the hole for the tab...if that makes much sense.

I would use the clip unless you want to keep taking it apart to fix it. the gear will most likely move because it is driving another gear and turning at high speed. You could try to bend the clip apart so that there will be some force applied, wait did you install the gear all the way without using the clip? The clip needs to be in place (the tab into the output shaft) then you slide the gear over it. You will know when the gear is in the right position because the tangs will come out the other end of the gear as you slide it on.

To get the driven gear off, put a wrench just bigger than the output shaft behind the gear and gently smack it with a mallet.
