Tranny Question

I am not sure f this is the right place to ask, but here is my question. I bought my 86 TA WS6 is January of this year. I went and got in Dynoed this weekend and for some reason we could not get an accurate dyno in third gear. Every time at WOT the tranny would down shift, so all of my dyno numbers were done in second gear. As we were talking about it I do not ever remember my car shifting in to third gear at WOT only during normal driving. The dyno guy said that there might be something wrong with my tranny. The car does have an ADS Super chip in it, which I did not put in, so I have no idea what it modified. Any thoughts? The only mods I have are as follows:

86 TA WS6, 47,300 miles
Underdrive Pullys
Flowmaster Catback exaust
Free mods
ADS Super Chip

There's nothing wrong with your transmission. It's supposed to do that: it exactly the same thign it does when you floor it to get on the expressway or something.

The transmission is not electronically controlled; only the TCC is; so the chip has nothing to do with it.

Next time, disconnect the TV cable, and ease it VERY CAREFULLY through 1st and 2nd into 3rd. Then it should stay in 3rd for the duration of the pull.

As far as the dyno is concerend, it makes no difference though; it probably just thought you had a 4.10 gear in it.

What sort of #s did you get?

My best pull was 163 HP and 251 torque at 4000RPMS.

Thanks for the info, I think the dyno guy was just trying to warn me, he said that he had never had that much trouble trying to keep a car in third for a pull.

Now I don't feel so bad.... my 305 with the stock Q-Jet, stock air cleaner, stock intake, all emissions devices installed and operating in California emissions trim, does around 210 HP and 282 ft-lbs; 209 once on a hot day, and 214 once on a 78° day. HP peak is at about 5200 and torque peak is at about 4200.

What year is your 305, because I know my cam is really hindering my car. That is on the list to be done soon, just don't know what to go with yet. I also plan on doing headers, AFPR, and a cold air intake. I thought my numbers are a little low, but I was not sure. At least it looks good and sounds damn good.

Your numbers are about normal for a stock 305 TPI auto car.

I'm pretty sure it should have stayed in third gear. Are you sure it wasn't the torque converter unlocking? When I last dynoed, we didn't start the "run" untill about 55-60 MPH, so when I nailed it, the Converter was unlocking. I was having to ease up to 75 MPH so that the TC would reach its unlock threshold (stays locked regardless of throttle position) then nail it. Next time, I'm just going to leave the converter unplugged.

I guess it could have been the TC unlocking. I did not know you could unplug the TC? I might have to try that the next time I get dynoed.

Yes, you can unplug the TCC. Simply unplug the 4-prong connector from the drivers side of the transmission. Just make sure you plug it back in before you go home.
