u can use a rear from a 3rd or 4th gen f-body. u can not use a montys rear becuz there different. or go with moser, currie but i doubt ur making that kinda torque right now to snap a rear but hey never know. that or get a eaton posi for a 10bolt 7 1/2'' or 7 5/8'' rear with 26spline axels and get a set of richmond gears from jegs. or u can get an auburn posi which is cheaper then the eaton.

I've heard auburn is a pretty sick posi, but the eatons are rebuildable. Which ones are the best ones out there. Also, are there any other reputable ones out there that are just as good? Where would be the best place to look for one? Online or in a 4th gen in a junkyard? Thanks for the help.

If you're looking for a 4th gen rearend with 3.42s you need to find a 6 speed or M6. The 3.42s came stock with them. I know I have a 35th Anniversary SS.

Is 4th gen a direct swap for 3rd gen?
I thought I read somewhere that the 4th gen rear end sticks out an extra two inches on each side if you try and mount it on a third gen (although apparently very doable - the brackets and all are VERY similar!).
I went throught his whole nightmare with my 1968 Firebird, trying to find a decent rear end without spending an arm and a leg. FINALLY found out that the 2cd gen Nova's were a direct swap. Proble, with the second gen Camaro's/Firebird's was that the rear was about an inch wider on both sides.

or 2000 C5 rims
..and the best part about having a 4th gen rear and 4th gen rims is that you only have to buy spacers for the front rims.
