Problem with YANK CONVERTER!!!

Last Saturday night I ran my best time to date. Decent weather. I have always run 8.2-8.4 at 80mph on motor(converter slips to 4500 on motor). I'm shooting 150HP N2O it runs 7.60's at 88-89mph(really doesn't matter on weather conditions) I tried a 175HP N2O and ran the same(spun alittle) at 89mph. The converter just slipped worst 5700.

So I desided to jumper the ALDL and make it lock up after 1st gear. With a 150HP N2O it went from a 7.6 at 89 to 7.42 93.5. Then I stepped up to the 175HP N2O and responsed with a 7.28 at 95mph(1.56 60ft). YANK has since day one (this has went on for 1.5 years) blamed it on a slipping tranny. I had it rebuild(tranny). I believe the tranny was fine..it has positve shift in every gear. I also checked line pressure..it was ok. I sent the converter back and had it freshen....I broke it in VERY EASY..KNOW MORE than 2/3 throttle for 1000 miles and change the fluid after that. The converter does the exact same thing. It was suppose to be a 3200 stall. It is there 9.5"/12" lock up converter. It has ALWAYS slipped to 4200- 4500 on motor and 5500 or so on the bottle..........

What should I do? Has anybody ever had a problem like this?

For the record I also swapped in the STOCK 1992 Converter (before the 1st rebuild) and ran 7.60's at 92.5mph In alot worst weather (hotter). The tranny did NOT slip.It laid down rubber when it hit second and chirped 3rd.

Thanks

You have what we used to call a UFO style torque converter. If the stall is to high to start with, then this will only get worse once nitrous is applied. I would lower the stall to the 3,200 rpm or less. If the transmission was the problem, it would finish itself immediately. I am surprised though that it has lasted with you doing WOT shifts locked up. From what I have seen in the past, this will devastate the unit. When the torque converter is built right it should give the best quarter mile performance in the unlocked position. The 9.5" A.C.T., or the Vigilante should do this. You do not break in torque converters, or do you have to make an oil change. This sounds like it carried itself over from the early days of breaking in an engine (non roller cam) and changing oil at the first 500 miles.

probuilt- i hope your gonna have a 700r4 that will handle 500 hp... my buddy already toasted a bowtieoverdrives unit....

as for the convertor... i would never go with anything but PI vigilanti convertors... just great deals, free stall change too up to 2 years later!

I agree I'd stick with Vigilanti or JW Converters if running older 3 speeds.

People on ls1.com have had a ton of problems with yank.

yank

I only did it a 3-4 times to get a good idea of what the difference is. I have always run it in the unlocked position. The converter was suppose to be a 3200 stall. Theyhave already freshen it up(fix) it once. It still did the same .I have never heard of a break in for a converter, but yank said to.

In having discussions with Sal at A.C.T., he will start to offer a 2-year warranty, and a free stall change within that time frame. I will have this information in the next couple of days. The Street/Strip 700R4 will hold 500 flywheel horsepower (with a 9.5" torque converter) just fine.
