Looking for a junkyard 12 bolt rearend, what should I get?

I'm looking to pick up a 12 bolt rear, what cars or trucks can I look for in the junkyard that has these rear axles?

Are there any other strong rear ends that would fit? I know that there are modifications that have to be done, to get the things to "fit"

Really all I'm concerned about is an axle that is within a couple of inches of ours, I can adapt everything else to fit.

Thanks,
Mike

Look for a 1st or second gen Fbody rear end. Its close in lenght but still alot of fab work.

you aren't going to find anything with a 12 bolt sitting in a yard. the last one was made in the 70s, no yard keeps anything that old. try looking at car shows and swap meets.

No offense, but your sig says your car runs 14.50's. Why do you need a 12-bolt? If you're planning for future performance upgrades, remember there's guys running 12's all day in LS-1's with stock rearends- and 4th gen rearends bolt right in.

Also remember truck 12 bolts and car 12 bolts are completely different.. None of the parts will interchange.

Yeah my car does run 14.5's with the ten bolt, and it'll probably run lower with it. But the last thing that I need to do is blow it out when I'm at the track or when I'm at school where I don't have time to work on the car. Its also important to realize that a newer 10 bolt is slightly different from the 10 bolts in our cars (yeah I could probably get one and put it in, but if I could throw in a stronger rear end why not?)

But at the same time, its true, I'll probably never have the car doing wheel stands down the highway so I could probably get away with keeping the 10 bolt but would you push it? Plus it sucks keeping a 7.5" ten bolt when no one makes parts for it. You can get the crappy littel gears for the series 2 carrier, an old posi unit or the Eaton. The eaton unit is good, but have you ever tried finding a rebuild kit for the a borgwarner or the Chevy style posi units?

I guess all that I'm saying is I don't mind spending the money for a little extra insurance, but $2grand isn't worth it when I'm capable of doing the work myself.
