I dont mean bad syncros or a slipping clutch, i mean serious damage

I think I've shredded about every piece there is at least once....

Most often, it's been the clutch gear & countergear parts that go together, from stretched cases. I also have one that I paid like $25 for, where the mainshaft is twisted in half. I had one where the tip of the mainshaft, where it goes into the rollers between it and the clutch gear, got torn up. I've had a fifth gear turn to chips.

I think I've trashed at least 10, probably more like 12.

Then I made an astonishing discovery. Keep in mind that I learned to drive a stick shift on Muncies and T-10s. However, after all those years of 4-speed experience, I discovered one day completely by accident, that it's possible to remove my right foot from the floor while pressing the clutch with my left foot!!! Now my car doesn't go quite as fast, but 5-speeds sure last alot longer. I guess they're kind of delicate that way.

I've ripped the teeth off of third gear in two transmissions, once upshifting (while racing. It sucks even more because I lost.) and once downshifting (when I wasn't running it hard. downshifted getting on an exit ramp and it disintegrated). Consequently, I'm now looking for another T5 or a cost effective (and tougher) alternative.

RB83L69 may be on to something... Maybe I'll try his newfound shifting technique so I won't turn my gears into metal chunks...

Lift? I didn't know I was supposed to lift during the shift

Three Muncies in 9 months, now I too lift. . .

Doesn't the T5 have a weak case? Wouldn't it help to get the torque arm off of the back of it? I am putting one behind a 350 that should be close to 400 hp at the crank and I hope to keep it alive.

Yes the case is weak. No the torque arm has nothing to do with it.

yes the case is weak...and having the torque arm connected to it doesn't make it weaker...BUT...

Beefing up the factory torque arm and using a poly torque arm bushing can help to keep the tranny from even more stress.

And having a '67 SS Chevelle as my 1st car, I want to know what kind of 4 speeds you guys were running that kept together when speed shifting?

The original Muncie in my car took a well deserved vacation after the first 350 was built ( to replace the ailing stock 396 ). That was replaced by a later model M-21, which cracked the case after the first 427 big block was dropped back in.

It's a blur of T10's, a couple of Saginaw's ( they were free...sue me... ) then finally I scored a built M-20 from a guy who used to road race...that thing was awesome. Of course, it was LOUD as all get out, but who cares.

I even tried one of those Doug Nash 5 speed tranny's...that was FUN.....it lasted about as long as those $10 spark plug wires, but it was cool just to say I had a 5 speed all the same.

I went through my share of Muncies, too.

I had some Super T-10 cars in the 70s, those held up better.... of course, they also didn't have any power... L48s and such

If you like powershifting that's one thing.

If you're worried about going slower ( ET wise ) shifting while liftin', just practice.

When you're on, people can watch your car go down the track and they'll be hard pressed to notice when you shift gears....

It works try it

110k mile WCT5 is goin in a low 13 high 12 second car with 3.73's and probably a CF Dual friction clutch (still up in the air). It wont likely see slicks, but it will deffinatly be ran down the strip. I want it to last untill the T56 but thats a year away at best, if it can survive summer ( the only time our strip is open) then I'm in like flint

Guess we'll see

Power slid(ed) in 3rd gear, then all I heard was a really loud whining... then it stopped working lol.

Since I got the Centerforce clutch, the power was actually getting to the tranny, instead of slipping thru the stock clutch

I always read about people destroying thier manual trannies trying to "powershift" through the gears.....something stock manual trannies are not designed to do. I know why it's done, but as ctandc says - you can lift and still hit every gear pretty d*mn fast.

"Powershifting" is just as harmful to a stick car as "Power braking" an auto is....

They sell air clutches, dog ring setups etc... that will take the abuse if ya have the big $$$ for it. Now let me step into my flame suit......(zip)....

Power Braking an Auto that is in good shape only at the line waiting for that last amber to light up, isn't going to hurt anything.

Do it everyday 5 times a day for more than the 5-10seconds and yeah you can roast it.

I broke the T5 In my Jimmy... Though it already had it's issues when I got it from too much 4x4. There was a countershaft bearing going out aswell as the input shaft main bearing.... One of them had pins come out and now the gears are all overthemselves eating at each other.

Sounds horrid!

We broke the input gear plus the counter gear teeth off my brothers malibu wagon, non world class v-8 trans, 350 with comp 268 cam, 3.08 gears.

Also replaced a 5th syncro on a t-5 in a jeep CJ, cracked down one side, and it was hard to move the slider on and off, the guy brough it over cause it stuck in 5th gear.

My 90K mile t-5 went to 12.3 @ 115 mph before it nuked the teeth off of 3rd. I always lifted but I really beat it hard.
