Rear end leaking? How long can I drive with it?

Hi,

I am experiencing a leaking rear end. The car is 1988 Formula WS-6 with a 5 speed trans (probably a T-5) and a rear end (unknown type) that has a plastic cap for the oil.

It is leaking quite a bit, leaving 3 inches diameter spots of oil on the ground each morning. There is oil on the top of the diff. I think it is leaking by that stupid plastic cap. Plus, I think that there is no hole to relieve the pressure inside the diff. Hence a leaking cap.

Am I thinking right or not? Can I run the car or should I stop right now?

Thanks

why don't you juat add more oil if you don't or can't fix the leak. all rears should have a little plastic mushroom looking vent.

Hi ede,

I just want to address that problem in a definitive manner. I could add oil only, but that leak happened after I did some power slides with the car. Does my rear end is a 9 bolt or 10 bolt? Are these good rear ends? I need a strong rear end, well, a rear end that will support an LO3 with 170 hp and 255 lbs/feet.

What can I do with that plastic cap? Where is that vent?

vent should be on top or near the top of the center section, rubber plug shouldn't be hard to find. if you have the rubber plug you have a 9 bolt, yes it's a good rear. miles aka 88 427 camaro has a lot of parts for 9 bolts.

My rear end leakage ended when I took some Immodium.

Seriously though, I definitely understand you wanting to have a definitive solution to the problem.... I can't stand when something leaks from my car (and trust me, I have plenty of experience with that ) and it's not so much the replenishing of fluids I get upset at, it's the fact that people get pissed when I park in their driveway...

Thanks Guys

I have a 91' GTA LB9 700r4. It has a 7.5 2.73 rear end. It has alot of oil where the drive shaft goes into the housing. It doesnt leak on the ground but its just on the housing. I have a little screw/bolt that is on the side and whe i take it off oil comes out. Is there any problem there?

That's the pinion seal. Probably only leaking when you drive, so you don't notice anything on the ground. It will probably get worse and need replaced. If you don't fix it now, keep an eye on it and check the fluid often. It should be right up to the check/fill hole.

Hi Guys,

The problem I had was the pinion seal that was leaking. The cause of that is the exhaust line that is too close to the diff:I bought the car from a guy who had change the exhaust line and mufflers for a 4th gen set up. The pinion seal melted.

So I replace part of the exhaust line (back to the original set up welded to the 4th gen mufflers) and the seal.

Ciao and thanks for the help
