tranny pan tightness/ leak

Alright a few Months ago I had a post about how my trans was leaking well... It is still leaking but I moved on to other things. Well now I am back to the leak with a vingance. I have heard from several sources that when you tighten your pan to not tighten it much. My question is how tight should it be in your best description. This leak is really pissing me off. I have already bought new transmission lines and a new pan/ replaced the fluid several unneeded times and went through numerous sealants and gaskets please help me.

i tihnk the torque spec is something like 12 ft/lbs, so not very much, that would be in the 1/4 inch drive tool range

It is 12 ft/lbs. I put my tourque wrench in a vise and set the guage to this setting to get a feel for it. To me it felt like just a hair over finger tight.

Alright thanks both of you. Do you think if I put 2 gaskets instead of 1 it might seal better? It just a thought...

First, wipe everything down above the pan all the way around, wait an hour or when you know it starts to drip, go back with a "white" paper towel and find out where it is coming from, If it is from above the pan gasket line, then it is not the gasket, find & fix the problem. Do not use silicon of any kind! If it is from the pan gasket start with making sure the gasket cinch area is flat. Use a "duraprene" gasket, with both areas of the pan where the gasket goes is free from foreign material. Do not use any sealing compound, torque it to 65 - 75 inch pounds. Most so called pan gasket leaks are from above, TV cable, dipstick tube, etc.

I agree with not using any silicone sealants of any type, they will simply allow the gasket to squeeze out.. However, I have found that using some of the spray gasket adhesive (spray-tack rings a bell) along with cleaning the pan surface (and transmission) with something like brake clean will help seal it up... I just spray the gasket down with that stuff, then wait a minute, stick the gasket on the pan and then install...

Don't do the two gasket trick. It should not leak only using one gasket. I'd do what the other guys say and dig deeper into where the leak is actually coming from.

If I have a leak I cant fix I use a thin (paper thin) layer of hylomar on top of the gasket. The cheap cork gaskets suck though, either get a filter kit from Nappa (composite) or go to the dealer and you can either get a composite or a re-useable rubber, just tell them you have a 4l60 to make things easyer.

Hey I took my xmember off and I am looking for the spot where the O-ring goes. I took a pic so can someone point it out for me?

You need to take that little retaining bolt out, then pull the speedo housing out (the part that the cable plugs into). The o-ring goes around that casing...

More than likely it will be worse with 2 gaskets. Is your pan's rail warped or bent?

Yes it was worse with 2 gaskets. To my knowledge the rail isnt bent and I recently got a new pan and trans lines. I just know it is leaking in more than one spot...It leaks weird though it will leak a little for a day or so then it will flood it doesnt make sence to me.
