9 bolt w/4.10 whines

I just had 4.10 gears put in my 9 bolt last week and it whines pretty good going down the road. I was just curious if this was normal with the higher ratios in the 9 bolt, anybody have one with high gears?

Thanks
Tim

It whines mostly when I am just driving along. Not when I am accelerating, just when it evens out and is at a steady cruising rpm.
thanks

Are you sure it's the rear?
I chased this problem for months and it turned out to be the inner bushing in the tranny where the driveshaft yoke goes in.

Aside from the whine, how do you like the 4.10 gears with your combo of stealth ram and t56? Are you glad you went with 4.10's or do you wish you'd gone with 3.90's or 3.70's now?

mine do the same exact thing. Who put yours in? i talked to tony about it and he said he would buy me another set and do them free, but i don't think he realises the gear sets are as much as they are..

It whines at pretty much any speed above 30mph when cruising. It does not whine much when accelerating or slowing down. It is pretty loud. Zupman, does this sound familiar to you, it almost sounds like a bearing to me. I am not sure I want to hear this forever Drain, yeah so far I am happy with the 4.10s,if they were not so noisiy.

that sounds exactly like my problem. They don't whine under 20 mph, they don't whine under heavy acceleration, and they don't whine on decelleration. But they whine like crazy at cruise and when lightly accelerating. Wonder if this i a ring and pinion problem....who put yours in?

bubbz89,

The low series carrier, which is for 2.77 gears is different form the high series carrier 3.23+. In order to install 3.73 gears in your rear end you need to change out to the high series carier no way around it(10 bolt people can use a spacer).

That link that Zupmanz28 posted has the carriers for sale. Also check the classifieds on this site as there is someone who is currently selling a 3 series carrier and 3.45 grears for around $250. If I had the money at the moment I would buy it as it is a good deal and I'm also currently stuck with 2.77

What name brand did you go with? If it is Richmond gears then the whine is normal. After the gears get broken in the whine will go away.

Hey bubbz89, I just picked up a 3 series carrier and 3.23 gear set on ebay for $110. Check it out as there are a few 9bolt parts on ebay right now. I won't have to deal with break in whine since these are broken in already

Eric, I just finally got my car back after having the guy go back in there. The whine is gone now, it is nice and quiet. The problem was that the pinion was not deep enough into the ring gear. It is nice now.
