Powerglide swap?

Are they the same length as the 700R4 and will it use the stock mounting bar? Also, is there an aftermarket shifter for the powerglide in a Camaro?

swapping a PG into your car is about the dumbest move you can make, transmission wise. not sure about splines but the length should be the same if i remember right.

The glide is the same length as the t-350 and there are not any shifters, like the B&M Megashifter the bolt right into your console. Though I do not agree that using a Glide is "stupid" I do feel it is wrong for a full bodied Camaro. Glides like cars below 3000 lbs and would be a poor choice for anything heavier.

Not sure what your comment about being dumb is suppose to mean...it is one of the most popular applications at the track.

PG is for light cars, not heavy thirdgens and the PGs you see at the track isn't a GM made trans and shares only a few superfical chacteristics with the GM made PG.

You will actually run a slower time and burn up the bands/convertor by trying to run a glide in a heavier car such as a 3rd gen unless you have it totally gutted for pure bred racing and get the weight to a minimum of 3000lbs. When running a heavier car such as these 3rd gens, the extra gearing helps get the weight moving and is much easier on tranny parts since not as much slippage in the convertor helps keep internal temps down. Gearing will also play a huge role in the tranny temp dept. Point in case-friends 454 Malibu runs 11.6's with his 4.11 gear and 3500 stall, TH350, he installed his back up 3.50 gear last weekend as he's looking for more streetablity on the hwy, only lost .1-.2 overall in the ET dept., but the trans temp coming down the return road and into the pits were 220-250, waay too hot for a tranny!! Compared to the 140 it comes in at with the 4.11 gear.

the PG I am considering is a race ready tranny built by one of the local speed shops. He and his trannies have been recommended for my Camaro by quite a few people. The guy who first suggested a PG to me has been running at Eddyville for about 12 years and said the PG will actually provide lower times with the same gearing as the TH350.
I will be running a 4.56 rear end and either the PG or a TH350...

When it comes to race parts, as we all know you can talk to 10 people about the same product/combination and will get 10 different stories/theories. That's why sometimes you just bite the bullet and try what you want, sometimes it works out and you can gloat over the ne-sayers and sometimes it does'nt and everybody says I told you so. If you think it's the right thing try it and see. As long as I have been doing this the general rule of thumb on glides is an application for 3000lbs and under and they will run faster than an egually equiped TH350/400, anything over 3000lbs you should look at 3 speeds. Just make sure when you have your convertor built that you have all the specs for everything so they can tweak it to your specific application and hopefully get a little more life out the tranny.
