The stick would win, because even with both cars being equal and bone stock, the auto would lose tenths at the shift points, whereas the stick would not.

Also the auto was rated lower than the manual due to drivetrain loss. I think it was like 20hp or so less. Given 2 totally stock cars the manual will win everytime (as long as it's a good driver).

there were no 5.7 2002 camaros, something like 347 cid if i recall. really hard to compare or conside then equally because of differant gearing and such. i'd say there is no answer nor proof on any given day either could win or lose depending on a varity of factors. so there's your proof and you can impress all your bench racing friends with your knowledge and resources.

The LS1 is 347CI not quite a 350 but still rated as a 5.7L

The 6 spd would have an advantage, 1st gears is similar but there is a lil more in 1st on the stick, and stock for stock, the auto would not have a firm enough shift, thus losing some time between gears, and there is more lost hp through the auto.

However the guys with the autos dont have much to worry about. They can program the PCM, and put in a shift kit to make up for lost time between shifts, install a higher stall TC, and change the rear gears to make up in the 60'. So for the slush box guys, they can easily do this to meet or exceed the pros on the 6 spds. Then it would come down to what they wanna to do their motors.

guess you'd also want to consider length of track, or type of track, lane conditions, and all the other variables that would factor into it. i'd bet if you optomized the track length or type for either car/engine/trans combo you could make either the winner.

In almost all cases, the stick would win with similar horsepower, torque, and rear end gear ratio. Once you add a 9.5" diameter (apx. 2,500stall) then it becomes a "new" ball game. Torque converters are what make the biggest difference, between the two vehicles.

I agree that the manual will win. But like Dana said, the TC makes a big difference. Hands down the best mod you can do to an automatic.
