sounds like a good price, i got mine (700R4) done for $1200 with a shift kit to go with it, but i'd check some of the stuff in the shop, see what kinda parts their using, Trans go, borg warner, etc.
Jeez!
I guess I am really cheap but I took my 350 to a tranny shop(I was looking around alot) and they took my old one and gave me a refurbished one with a 4 month warrenty for $325.00 b4 that I was going to take it to my friend to repair it he would charge me $150.00 and I had to supply the rebuild kit but I prefer the warrenty

I take it you're talking about an auto trans....
The last time I needed one, I went to the junkyard and bought a core for $75, and a master kit for about $80, and rebuilt it myself. This was a turbo 350, for an El Camino I have.
A 84 TA doesn't have a 350, at least not stock. It would be a 700. If it has overdrive it's not a 350.

Unfortunatly i took my car on a road trip out to the east coast, and it died right in Niagra Canada. So i was forced to buy a rebuilt 700R for 650 bucks. Not the Canadian kind either. I guess i could have been ripped off a lot more, i was pretty much stranded, and they did get it in in a day.
oh well, still sucked!

If it has overdrive, it isn't a 350. The stock trans in that car was a 700-R4. Most likely that's what you really have. It's the only V8 transmission from those years that has the torque arm mount to fit these cars.
In any case, don't go around thinking you have a 350 if it has overdrive. That's part of your pricing problem. You walk into a place, tell them "rebuild my 350", they look at your car and see it's not a 350, and you are now instantly an idiot or a liar in their eyes. That's a bad place to put yourself. They will tell you to bend over, grab your ankles, and make a new friend.
You can get a better price sometimes if you do the R&R yourself. A guy can "bench" a transmission on the side, alot easier than he can pull a car onto a rack. It's a little less obvious.

both have overdrive and both where 350's
There's no such thing as a 350 with overdrive. A 350 is a 3-speed transmission. A few late in their life had a lockup clutch, these were known as a 350-C. There are very very few of them in existence. Your Camaro did not come with one. It came with a 700, like every other 85 Camaro with an automatic. No other automatic trans was available that year. No 3rd gen Camaro or Firebird ever came with a 350. Some came with 200s, in 82 and 83; and a very very few came with the 200-4R in 89. The others were all 700s.
If it has overdrive, it isn't a 350. If it's a 350, it doesn't have overdrive. Period. No point in arguing.

Yeah, what he said. By the way, my 83 has a turbo 350. I put it there though. Anyway, I thought I was getting a smokin deal on a 700R4 rebuild until I read EmoDork's deal: $650 for a rebuild when you're stranded far from home is the best price ever. My company took a van to Aamco up the street and paid $1150!
I'm getting a 700R4 built by a guy at a trans shop (as a side job) with a shift kit and a new Corvette converter for $700, which I thought was pretty good.

We'll SSOOORRRYYYYY Fine 350's don't have overdrive but it sure as hell feel's like it does and the reason why mines didnt come with a 700 is b/c mines was originally a 6c. car but I converted it to a 8c. and put in a 350 tranny with long tale.

I just paid $1440 for a total race rebuild on my 700R4, which included all Borg Warner racing clutches, new steels, new sprags, heavy racing bans, 13 vein impeller in the pressure pump, a 500 lb booster valve, Corvette servo, Superior HD shift kit, and a Corvette converter with a cut stator. It also came with a one year/12,000 mile warranty. My car now barks the tires going into 3rd gear, so needless to say, I'm pleased!! Yes, it is a lot of money, but you get what you pay for (which I learned the hard way), and you have to pay, if you want to play!!
