gettin rebuild, is this guy screwing me?

when i called this place, the guy said for the 700r4 he would rebuild it for 500-550. I thought that was a good price, so i asked if that included the whole r&r stuff, and he said yes. They even offered me free pick up and delivery. Seemed too good to be true. I had them pick the car up and I called them the next day to see how things were going. The guys secretary talked to me because he was out of the office, but apparently, he says i need a new flywheel, rear engine seals leaking, and i have hard parts broken in the tranny? (her exact words were that my tranny has "issues") I said for them not to do ANY work until they call me back with an exact price quote....because apparently the guy only quoted me on "soft" parts...i didnt think i needed hard parts (no grinding, or anything like that just some slippage and then it died) WTF is up with this guy..? is he tryin to screw me? or does it seem like hes just lookin out for future problems for me?

If it was my car I'd go in and have him show me whats wrong and what hard parts need to be replaced.

That would be the best way to tell if your getting cornholed.

I don't anymore. I trusted my transmission guy untill yesterday. He was supposed to put the transgo reprogramming 2&3 kit in my trans. The other night I was putting the sysko kit in it with dana's help over the phone I found out he didn't put any of the kit in.

I was pissed. So I took the whole valve body apart step by step and circled everything that wasn't done. The next morning I went to his shop and asked him about it. At first he really didn't say much but then I pulled the instructions out and asked why this this this this and this wasn't done. His excuse was he had been building transmission for years and that transgo wasn't always right on there kits(you should of heard dana's response to this!) I told my tranny guy to get me another 2&3 kit and I would put it in myself.

So my transmission is in about 100 pieces right now getting the 2&3 kit and the sysko kit.

Dana at probuilt is the man. I have never met someone so concerned about the customer. Anyman that will talk to you for 45 minutes while he is on vacation with his wife yelling at him in the background deserves somekind of award.

Thats how alot of trans shops work. They "lowball" you to get your tranny apart in the shop, then they hit you with the big numbers. They will probably rape you on hard parts, and now that they have your transmission, you are committed, or leave with a box full of parts
You should have asked around (especially here) and weighed your options.

i agree with bernard, it's common for a tran shop to quote a rebuid and only quote for soft parts knowing it's very seldom that soft parts is all you need. with an aluminum valve body it doesn't take much dirt to trash one and add 400-500 to the cost of a rebuild. if it were me i'd look in to a new rebuild from gm and compare it aginst the cost and warrenty of rebuilding your original trans.

I paid about 700 a few years ago to get my trans rebuilt...that's a pretty std. price here in Indiana. That's soft parts.

FWIW: My valve body was cast steel...the aluminum part of the body is cast into the actual case AFAIK....

When you go in to look at it, he'll show you what's broke...but how do you know that what he is showing you actually came out of your transmission.

well the price i got now is 1100 after tax...ect, whats included in the rebuild, is a new front pump, front seal, bushing, torque converter, rear engine seal(mines leaking) all the soft parts, and umm the r&r is included...so i dont think they raped me that bad...oh yeah and they're putting in a throttle adapter for my edelbrock carb because i didnt have one so thus far i think im in good shape, i gave them a 500 deposit, and now i only have like 600 to go :lala:
