Screeching noise at 2000 RPM in every gear

Just like it says in the heading. I get this weird loud screeching/chirping/whining noise in every gear as I pass 2000 rpm. If I keep the engine at 2000 rpm the noise stays. But if the car isn't in gear and I rev to 2000 there isn't any noise. Also seems to go away if I take my foot off the gas. Talked briefly to a service department guy and he doesn't know off the top of his head and I'd prefer not to bring the car in if that's at all possible. Any ideas what this could be?? I don't want to make it worse...

What's your tranny? Could be clutch packs.

Still can't nail this @#@%?$!%! problem down. Am I slowly wearing something away? Is my wheel going to pop off tomorrow? I don't want to just get used to it... can't be healthy.

Anyway, I have a 5-speed manual. Don't know which exact tranny, but whatever comes standard with the 305 TBI.

Could be your forks winning to keep it in gear
does it seem to want to pop out of gear?
If it is that means your forks are going, and it will strt popping out of gear soon, also if you can look at your trans(under the car) if it all black that means youur leaking and need to refill it
Hope its the latter

I hope it's that simple... the transmission function itself seems fine though and I've never had any problem with the gears. They're still shifting smooth and I haven't slipped a gear yet. I'll double-check the fluid just in case though.
Are there any other possibilities?

Well, went to a mechanic the other day and found out the problem: the clutch's pilot bearing is going. So now I have to get a new clutch

But hey, at least the transmission's okay...

You don't have to get a new clutch and pressure plate, and you don't have to resurface the flywheel either, but both would be a good idea since you already have it apart. The pilot bearing is in the end of the crank. Really has nothing to do with your clutch, though it comes in the clutch kit. Id also change the tranny fluid but you don't have to.

Fair enough... I want to do what's best for the car, so I think I'll be replacing the clutch and machining the flywheel. That said, what's an economical aftermarket clutch that would improve upon stock? And where should I buy it from? Obviously Centerforce comes to mind as a quality clutch manufacturer, but is there another option or two out there?

I did a search and found people mentioning "Spec Stage 1" as well as "Luk". The cheapest one seems to be Luk, but I don't know anything about the quality. Any suggestions/info would be appreciated... I've kinda neglected paying attention to potential clutch upgrades over the years and now I'm lost

Its really a simple job and the only tip I have for ya. Most people would /will paint the trans and bell before its re-installed. Easier to put the clutch and bell on first, then the trans. same for removal, take trans off, then the bell and clutch.

OK but on the bell, the big circle the trans goes through, make sure not to paint that inner round lip. I made the mistake of painting everything blue, then someone made a smart remark about "how you gonna see it, what a waste"so I spent $10 on some super bright green paint just to bug them even more.

Well the only problem that caused is the trans didn't want to go in , from the paint build up. I did everything myself but had to get help on that last final part of the install. Which turned out to just be paint build up holding it back.
