Rear end- too much oil??

I've suspected a leaking rear pinion seal and I finally got around to pulling the plug to top off the oil. I had the rear jacked up because I was changing the spings & shocks. I took out the plug and a lot of gear oil came out- about 3/4 cup. I put the plug back in and lowered it to ride height and pulled the plug again. Still more oil came out. I thought it was full when the oil was even with the plug hole? How could someone get more oil in? And am I ok with loosing that much oil?
After looking at the oil in rear that spilled out, I think my leak is from my manual transmission and its running down the driveshaft because its red oil-ATF.
If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it!

yeah that was my understanding, roughly having the rear end like at ride height pull the plug and it should be right there under the hole, so if u have fluid coming out i wouldnt worry about it as long as the fluid is up to the fill hole.

you should be fine, its not like you just had it overhauled and still needs to get every where. some one mostlikely jacked up the right side and filled it up causing some extra to be added

Thanks!- that makes sense, somone jacking up that one side. Here I was, expecting it to be bone dry. Now I have to find the real leak-
